My name’s Ryota. I was born in Mie, Japan, grew up in California, and have called Kyoto home since 2010. I run local restaurants here and have known Julian since I first opened back in 2016. After years of meeting amazing locals and travelers, I joined him on this night walk to share the Gion I’ve come to love—its lantern-lit streets, hidden corners, and stories that keep Kyoto’s traditions alive.
