You can purchase a single trip opal cards at the ferry wharf, this ferry will take you to darling harbour in about 7 minutes

The best way to travel in Sydney! No better way to see Sydney that from the water. If you're going to the City highly recommend a ferry ride to Circular Quay. You can pay on arrival. Suggest buying an Opal card there to make public transport easier to use. There are also Ferries available to Balmain, Darling Harbour, Grenwich and Hunters Hill. Also note from Circular Quay you can easily catch a ferry to Manly or Taronga Zoo.
