Cross Scotland’s only lake to explore a peaceful, wooded island chosen as a monastic sanctuary. Robert the Bruce sought solace at Inchmahome Priory and Mary Queen of Scots found safety here as a child.

Great place for a day out if the weather is nice - pack a picnic and take the boat across Scotland's only lake (the rest are lochs). Explore the island and what's left of the Priory, then find a quiet spot to eat lunch and enjoy the scenery.

Located on an island in the Lake of Menteith, Inchmahome Priory was founded in 1238 and much of the 13th century building remains. Inchmahome Priory is a beautifully situated monastery, founded by a small community of Augustinian canons led by Walter Comyn, the Earl of Menteith. The isolated island location gave the perfect tranquility for worship, and the priory has links with many famous historical names including Robert the Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots and Sir Walter Scott.
