Built in the 12th century, Banteay Kdei served as a monastery until the 1960s. Over time, the quality of the sandstone deteriorated, and the monks were forced to abandon the temple complex. The name Banteay Kdei translates into ‘Citadel of Cells’. Today, the temple is a tourist attraction. Its labyrinth of overgrown halls and courtyards are a fascinating maze of chambers that are a delight to explore. Musical accompaniment is provided by the loudest cicadas on earth. They live in the surrounding jungle. A great time to visit Banteay Kdei is in the morning when the sun rises over the Angkor Archeological Park.
