Sitting in Lancashire but only a few miles from the Cumbrian and Yorkshire borders, the Highwayman started life as an 18th - century coaching inn, in the perfect position to offer comfort and respite to those on their travels. Thankfully it retains much of its original charm. On entering you're welcomed by the bar which forms the heart of the pub. A mix of flagged stone and wood floors, rugs, plants and two open fires make for a cosy, comfortable spot to enjoy a drink with friends (or strangers) and a bite to eat if you fancy. Carrying on through and the pub opens up; just a little, into a garden room with picture lined walls and doors opening out onto the walled terrace, the perfect place to enjoy on more pleasant days. Back in the pub and you'll also find a private dining room. It's a lovely room with a homely feel created by the wall of books, plants and nic nacs. It comfortably seats up to 16 people for a private family meal or a business lunch, or, with a bit of furniture rejigging it would also suit perfectly a small gathering of up to 30 or so.

Excellent food, 10 minutes drive from the cottage. Cosy fires in the winter months and a fabulous outside dining area on warmer evenings. Excellent selection of dishes on the menu, the burgers are a family favourite. If sticky toffee pudding is on the menu - go for it!

Only 5 minutes drive from the Homestead this local delight has been relingo guests for centuries as a coaching Inn. A large pub with an excellent restaurant offering many of the food favourites such as Fish and Chips, Hot pot and a fantastic menu catering for all tastes. It is a particularly good choice for families with Children but please book early and it does get busy1

Sitting in Lancashire but only a few miles from the Cumbrian and Yorkshire borders, the Highwayman started life as an 18th - century coaching inn. Stone floors, cask ales and good food. The menu accommodates a broad range of dietary requirements including a very good gluten - free section. You can also download from their website a circular walking route guide so that you can build up an appetite before you eat!
