It is a secular wood of the highest ecological, naturalistic, faunistic and environmental value and is one of the oldest woods in Sicily. Geomorphologically it boasts an exceptional environmental diversity, ranging from clayey sediments to limestone rocks. Various ridges and differences in height dot the forest of hills such as Pizzo Castelluzzo, Serra Castagna, Pizzo Daniele and Pizzo Galera. Malabotta is an ecosystem made up of centuries-old plants, including the “Patriarchs of the Wood” centuries-old oaks with trunks over two meters in diameter. In addition, the vegetation is also composed of Turkey oaks, beeches, chestnuts, holly, holm oaks and various other species. The undergrowth passes from humid environments, to the prairie literally covered in spring by the Wild Peony (Paeonia officinalis), to drier and more rocky environments, where hawthorn, wild rose, thorny sparzio and other shrub species grow.

La Riserva Naturale Orientata Bosco di Malabotta è ravvisabile come l’ultima delle foreste che, un tempo, ricoprivano interamente la Sicilia. Si trova sui Monti Nebrodi, a ovest dei Monti Peloritani a circa 3 km dal sito megalitico dell’Argimusco.
