It’s 3 mile hike to Henninger Flats, where there is a campground, visitor center, and tree nursery operated by the LA County Fire Department. A perfect location for a mid-day picnic or an overnight escape. The hike to Henninger Flats is 6 miles round trip with 1,325 feet of elevation change. If you want to go farther you can extend the hike a bit farther up Mount Wilson Toll Road to a loop road to a helipad on the ridge above Henninger Flats, gaining broader views on an 8.7-mile round trip hike with 1,700 feet of elevation change. (I’ve taken the Toll Road Trail all the way up to Mt. Wilson plan 8 hrs to do this). Time: 2-3 hrs. Moderate. Gear: Map, Lt. weight hiking boots, , 3L of water.
