It’s set in its own secret cove a short drive from the beach village of Plakias Crete. It’s very different to most Crete beaches because of its incredible setting. It’s a long, narrow sea inlet between a soaring sea cliff on one side and a narrow finger of land on the other. There’s no sand, just rock and water. A bridge links both sides of the inlet – called the ‘Pirate’s Fjord’. This is possibly unique among Greece beaches – you come here to swim, snorkel or soak in the sun from the rocky area above the water.

Kalypso beach is located on south of Rethymno between Plakias village and Preveli beach. Kalypso is very impressive to say the least as it is surrounded by high rocks. The small port was used as shelter by pirates about 300 years ago. The Pirates’ Fjord is located 33km south of Rethymnon, in a tiny cove south of Mouri or Karavos Cape, near Plakias. It is a very narrow cove, formed between enormous vertical cliffs. The tiny beach shaped here has sand at its starting point and doesn’t exceed 2m in width. It deepens abruptly and changes to a deep rocky harbor. The fjord is named after the pirates who took refuge inside this sheltered bay during the Byzantine era. Today you will not find any pirates, but a modern hotel, within the limits of which the “beach” is formed. The hotel has put beds and umbrellas on the smooth rocks surrounding the fjord. In the fjord you can take some scuba diving lessons by the club based at the hotel. Moreover, the hotel provides water pedallons. The beach can be accessed only by crossing the hotel (accessed via Damnoni) or by boat from Plakias.

Kalypso Beach Crete is one of the best beaches in Crete, and one of the most unusual. It’s set in its own secret cove a short drive from the beach village of Plakias Crete. It’s also part of the Kalypso Cretan Village Resort & Spa, one of several Plakias resorts close by. It’s very different to most Crete beaches because of its incredible setting.
