The first lighthouse on Urbas hill was built after the annexation of East Prussia to The German Empire in 1874. The lighthouse tower had a hexagonal shape and was built of red brick. The light from this lighthouse was visible at a distance of about 20 nautical miles (≈37 km). During the war in 1944, the lighthouse was undermined by retreating German troops, but in 1945 the lighthouse was rebuilt. In 1953 it was finally restored. The current 29-meter tower of the lighthouse is made of reinforced concrete, now the beacon signals are visible at 22 nautical miles (≈41 km). Nida lighthouse operates automatically, only in the dark, radio signals-around the clock.
