An island in the middle of Sydney Harbour that’s a UNESCO World Heritage site dotted with historical buildings. Catch the ferry from Circular Quay—a journey in itself—to see architecture from five distinct eras. Squat, convict-built lock-ups of Sydney’s beginnings contrast with grand-scale ship-building facilities of a once-thriving industry. Dedicate a good half-day here: there’s also a cafe, a bar, walking tracks, and several ways to interact with the history, including an audio tour and video installations. This isn’t a pretty, Disneyfied experience—it’s quite gritty. And an interesting contrast against the sparkling harbour.

The island is a heritage site and used to house the worst prisoners in Sydney - as well as being an industrial precinct. It has a rich and interesting history. You can get the ferry across to the island and walk around it. There are a couple of cafes on the island too. They also have camping experiences and hold music festivals there. Mid-week is the best time to go (when it's quieter).

Cockatoo Island is a UNESCO world-heritage-listed island in the middle of beautiful Sydney Harbour. Hop on a ferry and explore the island for the day or stay overnight in the campground or holiday houses. Views and an interesting place to visit, if you like industrial architecture.
