Showcasing hidden gems
Hosts in villages and towns across Ireland often fill a gap where there are fewer traditional accommodation options for visitors.
This creates opportunities for guests to explore less-travelled destinations and experience local communities. 45% of guests on Airbnb say they probably wouldn’t have visited the area they stayed in, if it wasn’t for Airbnb.
Supporting local jobs
Rural tourism creates thousands of local jobs, providing economic opportunities for rural communities.
Many hosts work with local service providers, like cleaners and builders, while hospitality and leisure jobs benefit from the increased number of guests. That means more jobs in the places that need them - helping local people in communities benefit directly from tourism. In 2022, travel on Airbnb supported over 4,900 jobs across Ireland.
Boosting local businesses
Travel on Airbnb significantly boosts local economies by bringing visitors to small towns and villages across Ireland.
9 in 10 Irish hosts recommend their favourite local restaurants and shops, encouraging guests to spend within the community. And nearly 60% of Airbnb guests in Ireland say they visited the places their host recommended. In 2024, guests on Airbnb in Ireland spent an estimated €136 per person per day.
Preserving Ireland’s built heritage
As part of Airbnb’s commitment to preserving Europe’s unique and historically significant buildings, we’ve partnered with Historic Houses of Ireland to boost heritage tourism and support historic Irish homes. Airbnb’s ‘Capacity Awards fund’ supports the development, maintenance and restoration of these important properties. Historic Houses are major drivers of regional tourism, delivering crucial economic benefits to local communities and businesses.

Helping with rising cost of living
For many hosts, homesharing is a chance to open up their spare space to guests, like an adjoining annexe, or a family home.
Hosting gives everyday people the chance to boost their income, helping to ease the burden of utility bills, groceries, and other daily expenses. Over 60% of Irish hosts say this extra earnings help them cover the heightened cost of living.
Supporting new rules for short-term lets
Rules for short-term lets must strike the right balance between the needs of local communities, hosts, and guests.
Airbnb has long called for the government to introduce modern short-term letting rules, including a host register, that protect the families, communities, and businesses that depend on rural tourism. At the same time, Airbnb has worked with the EU to develop clear, simple rules that are easy to follow, and give authorities access to the information they need to enforce fair and proportionate rules.Sources
