Hovedøya is one of the small islands very close to Oslo city centre. You can catch a ferry using your public transportation ticket from Aker Brygge, very close to Nationaltheateret metro station. The island has a beach and nice spots to swim and sunbathe, and there is an old monestary ruin and a cafe.

If you want to get out of the city for one day, my best tips is to jump om a ferry from Aker Brygge and go to Hovedøya. (the tram/bus/tbane tickets are also valid for the ferrys) This island is very quiet, very green, has several beaches and a cosy cafe. I prefer swiming at the smaller beach at the backside of the island. You can also choose to visit some of the other islands, Gressholmen has a nice resturant.

Take the ferry from Rådhusplassen, it takes you to all the islands in the fjord on the same fare as your bus ticket

One of several islands just a short boat trip away from Aker Brygge. Pack your picnic bag and make a day of it :) Use the same ticket as for the tram, bus and metro. Tram 12 to Aker Brygge + boat to Hovedøya.
