This is the top shrine in the Shinto religion. The top three Shrines are said to hold three artifacts: the mirror, the sword and the Jewel. The sword is at Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya. The jewel is at Meiji Shrine in Tokyo, and the mirror is at Ise Grand Shrine. It is a beautiful place in an old-growth forest. There is also a great shopping street nearby.
You can visit Ise Shrine by walking from Osaka all through Kumano Kodou, as since 1000years ago pious men and women have been doing as pilgrimage. The walk is through huge woods in quiet mountains.
There is the Emperor Shinjingugu "Nakomiya" (Naikuu) where the god of the sun is enshrined and Toyoshiro Jingu Shrine "Gekuu" where the gods of clothing and shelter are enshrined. Although the Uchimiya and the grand shrine are apart from each other, first visiting the grand shrine and then visiting the shrine is regarded as the correct worshiping method.
