I hesitate to even tell people about this place, but the secret is out! It’s not easy to get to… you’ll need a 4WD Jeep/SUV/truck and a healthy sense of adventure. Or, you can hike in, or pay one of the locals waiting with trucks to take you in. It’s a truly magical place but not for the faint of heart! The sand is made of crushed Olivine, and is one of only 4 green sand beaches in the world. Please do NOT take sand with you from the beach!

Papakolea Green Sand beach is a must see for the adventurous traveler. To access the beach, there is a 5.5-mile round-trip hike. It is not a difficult hike; however, the terrain is uneven, with an elevation decrease on the way in of 275 feet. Be sure to bring food, water, and sunscreen as there are no amenities at the bottom. There are sometimes local guides at the entrance who will charge approximately $20 round trip to drive you to the beach but be sure to arrange a pickup time with the driver. Be aware that there is no lifeguard on duty at this beach and the surf is quite strong on the south shore. Swimming is not recommended.

One of the four green sand beaches on the planet. Located a two and a half mile hike from South Point Parking Area near the boat ramp, South Point Hawaii. The Southern most place in the entire United States. Swimming is good here. No rest room facilities here.

This is only one of four green sand beaches in the world. This is a 5.6 mile roundtrip hike from the parking lot to the beach and back. Note it is illegal to take a vehicle or ride with someone to the beach. It is also a sacred place, so please respect the land and local Hawaiian culture by walking to the beach- Mahalo
