One of our favorites when we live over in NE Portland. It's still worth a drive and we still go every now and again. This location is much smaller of the two. It's fine if you can get a table and takeout is a great option from this location.

This is where we do most of our grocery shopping. There are many Fred Meyer (Kroger) stores in the area and this one is one of the smallest. It doesn't have clothing or furniture, but will meet all your grocery needs.

I've hiked this mountain about 75 times as training for mountaineering expeditions, and never get tired of it. It's mostly wooded and has a great view of the Columbia Gorge from the summit. There are 2 variations....Shorter and steeper, or longer and not as steep. The trails are well maintained and very easy to navigate. Get there early to avoid the crowds. Especially on sunny weekends. It's around 7.3 miles on the shorter version and 7.8 on the longer version and gains about 2800 feet. It's a little over an hour away with good traffic.

It's almost impossible to get lost unless you wander off the clearly marked and well maintained trail. It's worth continuing up to Devils Rest, as none of the crowds continue up there.

There are a couple of different routes, but starvation ridge is my favorite. It's pretty steep. Many people use this one as training for climbing Mt Hood. The running joke in the mountaineering community is that people climb Hood to train for Defiance! If you want to avoid the crowds on Dog mountain, but want a similar experience, just go to the top of starvation ridge (about half way to the summit) for a great view of Mt Adams. If you take all the shortcuts(VERY steep), it's about 12 miles round trip to the summit and back.

In good traffic, it's about a 10 minute drive. Avoid rush hour though if you can. Hwy 26 can sometimes turn into a parking lot during the morning and evening commute.

A getaway to Hood River is highly recommended if you have the time. The town has a cool funky and boutique feel about it. If you are a water sports junkie, this is the place for you.
