Its construction began in 1861, being inaugurated in 18 of September in 1865 by the king D. Luis.
It was designed to host the great International Exhibition of Oporto, organized by the then Industrial Association of Porto, now the Business Association of Portugal.
The Crystal Palace was still an important cultural space, containing a pipe organ that was one of the largest in the world. It was in this palace that important concerts of the composer Viana da Mota or the virtuoso cellist Guilhermina Suggia took place.
The palace was destroyed in 1951, and there was erected in its place an armed concrete ship, which was given the name of Pavilhão dos Deportes,
