Seokchon Lake Park is recommended as one of the best walking courses in Seoul. It is a great place to walk throughout the four seasons during day or night, but especially in spring when flowers are in full bloom. Jamsim-beol, the north part of Seokchon Lake, was originally a ferry and its formal name is Songpanaru Park. It is an artificial island formed by the gradual accumulation of silt brought down from the upstream of the Han River. The lake has two parts: the East Lake and the West Lake. The East Lake is a good place for jogging, resting place for nearby official workers, and walks for bicyclers. The West Lake is good for having fun since it contains the Magic Island of Lotte World.

Opened on June 18, 2005, Seoul Forest had previously undergone a series of changes on Ttukseom (Ttuk Island). In the past the forest had been a royal hunting ground for kings and served as a military inspection facility. But, in more recent decades the area has served a wide variety of functions. Ttukseom initially served as a water-treatment facility, and later as a golf course, horse racing track, and eventually a sports park. Consisting of five parks spread over 595,000 ㎡ of land, Seoul Forest is an eco-friendly zone appreciated not only by the people of the city but also those visiting Seoul. To most Korean people today Deoksugung Palace is largely connected with the desperate struggle of the Joseon Dynasty to survive amid the incursions of the major imperial powers at the turn of the 19th century. It was in 1897 that King Gojong proclaimed the launch of the Korean Empire and designated Deoksugung as the imperial palace after leaving the Russian legation where he had taken refuge one year earlier in a desperate attempt to keep his government free from the interference of Imperial Japan.
