Probably my favourite in Braunton, The Riverside is a great bustling little café in the day, and a contemporary restaurant during the evening. With a great selection of superb fresh, homemade food, there’s always something for everyone to enjoy. Tuck in to a yummy open sandwich, chunky homemade burger or freshly caught fish and enjoy dining at The Riverside as much as we do (probably worth a reservation this one!)

Lundy is an island in the Bristol Channel, lying only 18km from mainland Devon. It is just 5.5km long and less than 1km wide. A visit to the island is a unique and worthwhile experience, and although small, offers a diverse range of things to do for day-trippers. The seas around Lundy have been designated England’s first Marine Nature Reserve, creating opportunities for diving. Because of its isolation, the habitat for wildlife is often compared to that of Galapagos. And its backdrop of natural rugged beauty makes it a walker’s paradise. To get to Lundy you can jump on board Lundy’s very own ferry and supply ship, ‘MS Oldenburg’ – which is a great experience itself! The ferry operates from late March to late October and can be boarded from either Bideford or Ilfracombe and takes about 2 hours each way. On the Island itself you will find both a shop and a pub to sit and relax in.

South and West of Braunton lies the Braunton Marshes, leading out to Braunton Burrows (one of the most important sand-dune systems in Britain). It forms the core of the UNESCO Biosphere reserve, and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful areas in Britain. A great day out for walkers and wildlife lovers (the Burrows supports over 400 flowering plants and over 30 species of butterflies). It is also a great place for bird-watching.

Clovelly is a beautiful and tranquil little village, with its whitewashed cottages, quaint quay, small fishing industry and peaceful traffic-free environment. It is owned by one family (one of only 3 since the Norman Conquest) and has plenty for visitors to do and see. Here you can soak up the atmosphere by wandering around the cobbled streets, grab a donkey ride down in to the village centre, ponder at the stunning views of the North Devon coastline and have a fresh seafood lunch at the Red Lion Hotel on the quayside. A great time to visit is in July for the Maritime festival or in September for the Herring Festival.

Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway is probably the best and most exciting way to travel between the historic and picturesque towns of Lynton and Lynmouth. The whole family will love this thrilling vertical journey from Lynmouth, nestled at the foot of the cliffs, to Lynmouth, which is perched 500 feet above! Enjoy stunning views of the North Devon coastline as you glide along the track of this extremely environmentally friendly tourist attraction, which requires absolutely no power to operate. Whilst you’re at the top, why not stop for a refreshment at The Cliff Top Café where you will get possibly the best cream tea in the whole of the West Country (as well as a great range of homemade cakes, tray-bakes and freshly ground coffee too!)

This offers great entertainment for the whole family, with a fantastic hands on interactive exhibition, games and quizzes, brass rubbings, and children’s costumes to dress up in! It is open all year, and reasonably priced, making it a great location for a fun family day out that won’t break the bank. Experience Saxon life as you travel back in time and see what’s for sale at the Medieval Market, hear merchants trading at the Tome Stone, and escape from the enemy as the Civil War reaches the town! You can also explore the more genteel 18th century, and tread the boards with John Gray’s Beggar’s Opera.
