Google maps is just showing the entrance to Cape Hatteras National Seashore. From Oregon Inlet to Rodanthe there are places to pull off on the side of the road and walk over to the beach and have a stunning, white sand beach just a hike over the dune all to yourself (or nearly all to yourself compared to Kill Devil Hills)>

From Oregon Inlet to Rodanthe there are places to pull off on the side of the road and walk over to the beach and have a stunning, white sand beach just a hike over the dune all to yourself (or nearly all to yourself compared to Kill Devil Hills)>

If you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle or are willing to hike out to the beach, this is a flat, white sand beach that is great for kids or those looking for a beach without steep drop offs or high surf.

Right across the street are a playground for the kids and Sam and Omie's restaurant - an Outer Banks institution. For snacks while you're hanging out on the beach here, try Cahoon's Market right next door. They have homemade salads and sandwiches as well as produce and gourmet items and beach gear.

Make sure you make a reservation on the NPS website if you want to make the climb. It's the closest lighthouse to us and the easiest climb. Great stop on your way to Oregon Inlet, Pea Island Wildlife Refuge and all points south on Hatteras Island. Right across from Coquina Beach Bathhouse.

Its less than a mile away, so you could walk or ride bikes there.
