Hiking

Local hikes that we highly recommend!
This is one of the most beautiful hikes we’ve done in the Mt. Baker Wilderness. It has stunning alpine views, wildflowers in early summer, wild blueberries in late summer, and brilliant fall colors in September and October. At the top you can drop down into the basin for a dip in one of many small ponds and snow tarns, or you can ascend to the peak for magnificent views. Please check “All Trails” or “Washington Trails Association” for current trail reports, conditions, hiking time, and directions to the trailhead.

One word….waterfalls! In early to mid summer the waterfalls along the trail are numerous and refreshing. Some are large enough to stand under and cool off. The views are also spectacular both as you climb and at the pass. Please check “All Trails” or “Washington Trails Association” for current trail reports, conditions, hiking time, and directions to the trailhead.

This is a short an easy hike that meanders along the edge of the Nooksack River. There are benches at one of the larger rapids to take a rest and enjoy the beauty of this gorgeous river. Occasionally you can also catch adventurous kayakers running this rapid. Please check All Trails or Washington Trail Association for directions to the trailhead, hiking time, difficulty rating, and current trail reports.

An absolutely stunning Alpine Lake that is a very short but very steep hike only 7/10 of a mile from the trailhead. However, this requires about a 45 minute drive from Glacier on a mix of paved and dirt roads. High clearance 4WD vehicles recommended. Please check All Trails or Washington Trail Association for directions to the trailhead, road conditions, hiking time, difficulty rating, and current trail reports.

*Summer 2022… the road to this trailhead washed out several miles from the top. The hike can still be completed but takes much longer. Please check All Trails or Washington Trail Association for directions to the trailhead, hiking time, difficulty rating, and current trail reports. This is the “iconic” hike that many people come to this area to complete. It takes you past wildflowers, waterfalls and over several stream crossings eventually landing you face to face with the spectacular Coleman Glacier.

Although this is a lesser known hike in the area it is still a beauty with great views and many geological rock formations that are quite stunning. The trail itself is not as well maintained as most of the trails in the area and does require a fair amount of climbing over fallen trees etc. But in our opinion, it is still a great hike. Please check All Trails or Washington Trail Association for directions to the trailhead, hiking time, difficulty rating, and current trail reports.

This is another iconic hike in the Glacier area. Please note it can be accessed from Hwy 542 at the trailhead, and, after more grueling switchbacks then you can imagine, you’ll arrive at the top in spectacular meadows surrounded by stunning peaks. OR it can accessed via the Damfino lakes trailhead which is definitely easier and more scenic. However this requires a longer drive to get to the Damfino Lakes Trailhead. Either way, you won’t be disappointed when you arrive! Please check All Trails or Washington Trail Association for directions to the trailhead, hiking time, difficulty rating, and current trail reports.

This is a difficult hike with lots of elevation gain and loss that eventually ends at a large lake with difficult shoreline access. Route finding can be tricky at times. So why would we recommend it? Because if you are looking for a full day adventure with great views and good fishing, this might be your jam. PLEASE check All Trails or Washington Trail Association for current reports on this hike as well as directions to the trailhead, hiking time, and difficulty rating. Start early, and plan for a very full, tiring, and adventurous day.

This is a very mild hike that meanders through cool shady forest eventually emerging on the Nooksack River looking out towards the Nooksack Cirque. The over four mile hike ( almost 9 rt) can feel flat and monotonous at times but the beauty at the end is well worth it. Please note at the start of the hike you either need to ford the river or find a log to cross. We forded it, and it was quite fun. Please have trekking poles if you do this, it really helps with the current. Please check All Trails or Washington Trail Association for current reports on this hike as well as directions to the trailhead, hiking time, and difficulty rating.

If you are willing to brave a white knuckle drive on rutted dirt roads with huge drop offs and no passing room ( you may have to back up to a pull out) these stunning alpine lakes surrounded by snow covered peaks will ease your rapid heartbeat and lower your blood pressure when you reach the top. Absolutely 10/10 spectacular. But, no joke about getting there. This is not a drive for anyone with a fear of heights, and you must have a high clearance 4WD vehicle or you’ll risk leaving a piece of your vehicle in one of the many deep “dips” in the road. However, as evidenced by the number of cars up there on weekends, many people have decided it’s worth it. There are several great hikes that start at the Twin Lakes with one of the favorites being a short but steep jaunt up to the iconic Winchester Lookout. After your hike, descend back down to the Twin Lakes for a dip. Or bring rafts or tubes for a relaxing float on the lakes. Then take a deep breath and get ready for that drive back down… PLEASE check All Trails or Washington Trail Association for current reports on this hike as well as directions to the trailhead, hiking time, and difficulty rating.
