We are surrounded by walking trails. One of Newfoundland's mysteries revolves around Saint Brendan who is said to have landed here in the 9th century, along with a team of monks from Ireland. St. Brendan's trail starts right at our property. The whole trail is about 7kms and if you look carefully, there is a rock with markings said to have been made during the visit. The trail has wet sections so boots are recommended. The views throughout are outstanding, including the view looking over St. Lunaire Griquet. Strongly recommended.

This is very much worth a visit. Some say it mimics the moonscape (apart from the sweeping ocean view). There are sea caves to explore (you have to find them first). If you are a keen gardener, you will enjoy seeing rare wild plants on The Cape. Admission to the reserve is FREE.

Norsted is a privately owned Viking village close to L'Anse aux Meadows. Some locals insist it is at least as good or even better than L'Anse aux Meadows. You be the judge of that - we think both sites are excellent. At Norstead you can see a full-size Viking ship as well as a working Viking village.

If you are looking for a challenge, then the Daredevil trail is for you. There are more than 700 steps up to the highest point on the tip. The reward is a spectacular view across St. Anthony and beyond. At the top, it is customary to write out your name using small rocks - almost like a medal of achievement. This trail is not recommended for people with heart or other medical conditions.

St. Lunaire Bay is a beautiful site, especially at low tide when many boulders become visible. Watch fishing vessels and maybe even a whale or two, float by.

St. Lunaire Griquet (Saint Loon-air grickit) is a small fishing community on the road to L'Anse aux Meadows. There is a general store, Burdens, that seems to sell everything. The store is open until 8pm most days. The staff are super friendly. The store acts as a local meeting place where locals are often sharing stories. Introduce yourself and ask for recommendations. The locals love to chat.

St. Anthony is a scenic 20-minute drive away. There is the small Viking Mall and several restaurants. Drive to the end of The Viking highway to Fisherman's Point and take in the ocean vista. Drop by the town hall and take a photo with a real polar bear (don't worry _ it's not alive). For those needing medical assistance, there is a well-equipped hospital and dentistry. Check out the small coffee shack where you can also buy local craft souvenirs. There are two major food stores - Foodland in Viking Mall, as well as Coleman's a little further up. If you enjoy craft beers, be sure to drop by The Ragna Rock pub who brew on-site. Try one of their local berry beers. Yours truly performs there occasionally.

Things to do

As you get into Raleigh (about a 20-minute drive), turn left at the T-junction. Follow the road around the bay and keep going. The road turns into a driveable track (the track is rough initially). Keep going. The track twists and turns all the way to the top. This area is locally referred to as The Moon's Cape. The scenery is very different. Well worth a visit. There is no cost to enter the reserve. Great for all ages as there is no difficult walking.

Travel

This is the closest airport to us (about a 30-minute drive). There is only one airline servicing it - PAL with flights and connections to/from Halifax, St. John's, and Goose Bay. Flights are pricey though!
