Shopping

When you step onto the worn floorboards of this shop and sniff the coffee-scented air you are transported to Muswell Hill of the early 1900s. Pyramids of tinned peaches, mosaics of dried fruit and the hugest choice of jams, pickles, teas, coffees, biscuits, cakes and old schools sweets - wonderful!

Parks & Nature

It's literally a step across the road from the house and you're in a fabulous open space which also has the BEST view across London. Go there on a clear day and you can see right across the Thames Estuary to Kent. At night you can see the whole capital twinkling most invitingly.

If you like wild swimming then consider visiting the ponds at Hampstead. There are three - women's, men's and mixed. The water is cold and deep but glorious and you will swim with the company of ducklings, lilies, irises and darting dragonflies. A sylvan paradise!

Getting Around

We love the W7 - it goes up and down the hill all day and night (great for late nights at the weekend). It links Muswell Hill with Finsbury Park and from there you can get anywhere in the capital.

Arts & Culture

It's a fabulous gallery full of faces - some famous, some just really interesting. You can spend hours communing with these portraits and then pop up to the restaurant on the top floor for a drink or cuppa and enjoy the view over London.

If you like theatre then the Park Theatre is a really great place with at least two productions on at their two theatres. There are loads of good, small fringe theatres all over London. I review plays for The Offies (a sort of Oscars for the fringe theatre world) and see a lot of shows which I can recommend.

Sightseeing

If you want a slice of ancient London then the quiet streets of Clerkenwell are worth wandering. It's an area which is so close to the City and St Paul's but full of small streets based on the old Medieval grid and there are now small shops and old architecture to explore.

Food Scene

It's a privately run cafe and shop which is an absolute treasure trove of gifts and useful bits and pieces. You can sit outside (but still covered) and there's always lots of toys for children.
