Cordoba Old Town - A World heritage Site

The historic centre of Córdoba is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. In 1984, UNESCO registered the Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba as a World Heritage Site. A decade later, it expanded the inscription to include much of the old town. The historic centre has a wealth of monuments preserving large traces of Roman, Arabic, and Christian times.
Each year approximately 1.5 million tourists marvel at this impressive landmark featuring several architectural styles and uniting religious elements of Islam and occidental culture. The building has mammoth dimensions: It stretches across 24,000 square meters and features as many as 856 esthetic columns made of marble, granite, jasper, and other fine materials. An incomparable symbol of Cordoba its construction began in the 8th centum right over the ruins of a Visigothic basilica. During the Al-Andalus era, the Mezquita underwent numerous renovations and expansions. In 1238, after the Reconquista, it became a Christian Cathedral, which is now merged with a forest of Islamic style columns and arches. The Patio de Los Naranjos, inside, is a good place to take a break before and after the visit. Don't eat the oranges as they taste bitter. If you'd like to enjoy some breath-taking views over the Jewish quarter you can go up to the old alminar at the top of the bell tower (passes every 30 minutes). In 1570, King Philip II, who was a great lover of horses, set out on a scheme to create a pure thoroughbred Spanish horse. For this reason, he ordered the Royal Stables to be built on land belonging to the Castle of the Christian Monarchs. Like the castle, it is predominantly a military building. Here, in this attractive setting, he bred the Spanish horse, also known as the Andalusian horse, which was of Arab origin. The main stable room itself, with its vaulted ceiling supported by sandstone pillars is divided into smaller separate areas, known as boxes.

There are many palaces, but no one like Viana in Cordoba. If you like plants and gardens you have to experience the Patio Tour of Viana. Viana Palace is a manor worth five centuries of history and remodeling. The remodeling that took place in the 17th century is the one that gives the palace its present look. It was inhabited by the Marquises of Viana until 1980. It's worth the visit since both the palace and its 12 gardens are open all year round, which will allow you to enjoy the beauty of Cordovan patios regardless of the season.

At the southern end of the Roman Bridge stands the Calahorra Tower of Cordoba, an ancient defensive fortress which is mentioned in a number of Arab sources on “Al-Andalus” (Arab Andalusia), as well as historical records ever since the Christian conquest of Cordoba. Its architecture reflects the successive renovations made to the tower. The horseshoe archway serves as an additional entrance gate, and its rectangular enclosure flanked by towers was rebuilt in the 12th century.

This museum displays a large figure of paintings of Julio Romero de Torres, who was a native of Cordoba and is regarded one of the greatest painters of Spain. This museum, housed in the same building as the Fine Arts Museum, in front of the Posada del Potro, was created in 1931, one year after the painter’s Julio Romero de Torres death. Julio learned about art from his father who was the director, curator, and founder of Córdoba's Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes and an impressionist painter. He took an interest in art at a young age and started studying at the School of Fine Arts when he was 10. He went to Madrid to work and study in 1906. He also traveled all over Europe to study and he picked up a symbolist style, for which he is best known.

San Lorenzo is one of the eleven Fernandine Churches of Cárodba. The others are: Magdalena, San Andrés, San Francisco, San Miguel, San Nicolás, San Pablo, San Pedro, Santa Marina, Santiago and Santo Domingo. The so-called Fernandine Churches are a group of religious buildings founded during the reign of Ferdinand Ill "the Saint" after the Reconquest of Cordoba in 1236. Many of them were built on top of former mosques, which showed Ferdinand's clear intention to wipe out the Islamic influence which was so visible in the city, as well as to repopulate various areas of the city with Christian subjects.

Strolling around old town

Part of the historical legacy of Cordoba is the huge number of squares, alleyways and other unique places that make the city a kind of outdoor museum. Street after street of decorative wrought-iron window grilles, balconies, fountains and small gardens, make it ideal for a relaxing stroll and reveal many of the mysteries of present-day Cordoba.
There is nothing like crossing the old bridge at the sunset... Once part of the Roman Via Augusta military road, the Roman Bridge crosses the Guadalquivir river. This bridge was of tremendous importance for defending Cordoba against offenses of Peter the Cruel. Today, a statue of San Rafael, the patron of Cordoba, can be seen on the bridge. The statue was built in 1651.

The Patios

The early city dwellers, first the Romans and 'later the Muslims, already adopted the typical design of the popular houses to our hot climate, building the living space around an inner courtyard (Patio), normally with a fountain in the middle and often a well to store rainwater. The Muslims made further adjustments by filling the courtyard with plants to cool it down. There are over 270 patios in neighborhoods such as San Basilio, Santa Marina, San Pedro, San Lorenzo... most of them do not accept visitors except in May during the Festival, but if you ask politely, owners might show them to you at any time.
In the district Barrio de los Toreros, you can find this valuable patio of Córdoba with everlasting communitarian essence. Nowadays it is still inhabited by some neighbours of artistic tradition. Its structure is atypical: it has several interconnected streets and exposes old rooms of common life such as the wash room, the kitchen, etc. authentic structure that should be awarded or exhibited in a museum. The great variety of flowers and rare specimens are the touch of originality of this patio that is worth an annual visit, a visit that is possible thanks to the collaboration of the neighbours and thanks to José Luis Carmona Ruiz.

THE SOUL OF CORDOBA - NIGHT-TIME VISIT TO THE MOSQUE-CATHEDRAL OF CORDOBA The light that bathes us from the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba is intense, penetrating, it lights the way and allows the dazzled visitor to discover the interior life that flows between its columns, its arches, and its walls, it brings us closer to its mystery and makes us feel like direct protagonists of its history. The audacious technical solutions and the incommensurable artistic beauty in this monument subtly reflect the interpretation of the very soul of Cordoba, the essence of its spirituality, the search for dialogue and constant devotion to and for God that illuminates mankind from the Cathedral’s Transept and bathes in light and patterns every corner of the building with uncommon beauty. The night-time visit The Soul of Cordoba is organized for groups of a maximum of 100 people who will be guided through the different areas of the Monument, called by the light and the direction of the sound. The narration will be given simultaneously in 9 languages: Spanish, English, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Arabic, and Russian. Reservations (1/2 weeks in advance) : Mosque-Cathedral tickets office and online: https://www.turismodecordoba.org/the-soul-of-cordoba +34 626 05 76 13

Madinat al-Zahra is the sumptuous palatine city that the Caliph Abd al-Rahman III ordered to be built at the foot of the Sierra Morena mountains to project a powerful image of the recently-created Independent Caliphate of Cordoba. The complex's famous Rich Hall (Salón Rico) was famous for its outstanding beauty with ivory and ebony archways, gold and precious stones. In 1010, after seven decades of life, Medina Azahara was sacked and destroyed by the Berbers, who razed most of this fabulous city to the ground. Excavated since 1910, the remains of this city let one anticipate the unimaginable glory and the pomp of this 10th-century city.
