Drinks & Nightlife

Cosy place for people of the neighbourhood at 200 metres from @Marieke. Pleasant cafe / eatery in the heart of Ledeberg at 200 m from @Marieke. You can go for a drink, a nice brunch or smaller dishes. Certainly worth on Sunday given the market on the square in front of the door. Mixed public, very friendly service. A good place to have a last drink before going to bed.

Authentic coffee bar in the center of Ghent. You just sit at a table where you find a free chair because there are not many places. Old framework where you sometimes have to wait, the staff is sometimes a little moody but the coffee (extensive choice) is excellent. You can also buy coffee roasted by Mokabon themself. Keep your ticket, because you pay at the counter when you leave. If it takes a long time before someone comes to collect your money, just put the required sum with the ticket on the counter and go outside. That is routine there. Open from 11 AM to 6 PM. Closed on Sunday.

This little café is very close to the most beautiful view of the city upon the St. Michael's Bridge, but still hidden enough to be a perfect local spot to grab a coffee. Slow coffee, coffeebeans from all over the world, the most delicious praliné-hot chocolate you've ever tasted? You'll find it at café Labath.

STAM is the Ghent city museum. It presents the story of the city of Ghent. A permanent circuit leads visitors along a chronological trail of objects and multimedia which trace the development and growth of Ghent. Temporary exhibitions explore the concept of 'urbanity' from different angles. A visit of Ghent is not complete without a visit to STAM..

A Museum of pyschiatry in a still-operating mental institution. The museum on the history of psychiatry was created in 1986. At that time, there was a great deal of resistance against opening this piece of heritage to the public, certainly among those who worked in mental health care: the shame they felt for the past was so strong, their own history seemed to have some sort of taboo about it. But the great value in both the building and in the old objects that are kept there make it a unique place to visir. There is always also a temporary exhibition. Actually (up to June 2019, it is "Sensations, In-between passion and pain". See http://www.museumdrguislain.be/en/ for more information

The MIAT is the place to go if you want to learn about the history of industry in Ghent. The museum is set in a former mill-building (what better place to learn about industry in Belgium) and covers five floors. Whilst travelling through 250 years worth of industry, you will see and learn about plenty of machinery, which is even still operated on certain days of the week. It is deafeningly loud but luckily earplugs are provided! As an added bonus, there are great views of the city from the building’s top floor.

Even in Ghent, a city with many beautiful buildings, this building stands out. The Stadhuis, or city hall, took almost a century to build before it was finally completed in 1600. The architecture is flamboyant and Gothic the building is often referred to as the building with many faces. The rooms of the interior are varied in style but all are stunningly decorated and preserved. The hall is obviously a popular spot for weddings but tourist access is limited. Hour long tours begin at the tourist office and cost 5 euros per person.

Food Scene

Brasserie in the center of Ghent, A bit bourgeois but with all sorts of people including chic dressed up oldies who have lunchthere since years. The shrimp croquettes (‘garnaalkroketten’) and the Flemish stew (‘stoverij’), both Flemish specialities are excellent. My favoriite is 'Steak tartare from the chef' (from the best I've ever eaten) and . Now it's been a long time since I've been there and I do not know if that is still on the menu. Smooth service with professional staff. Open from 11.30 AM to 10 PM. Closed on Sunday and Monday.

Busy visited restaurant (reservation is needed) with authentic Lebanese food. It is also cheap for what you get. Preferably order some smaller dishes and share them. This way you get an overview of all smells and tastes. Really tasty - beautifully served. Very friendly staff.

Restaurant in a former Franciscan church. Only open at noon on weekdays. As a social project, it serves a tasty and healthy daily special and a vegetarian alternative. If you don’t like those two, you can always opt for the salad bar. With a drink included it costs less than15 euros. On your first visit you better ask help about how things work, otherwise it may seem a bit chaotic. But once you understand it it is very easy. Open from 12 noon to 2 PM

Small, messy but very charming tapas bar in a small street in the Patershol, the old center of Ghent close to the Gravensteen. You can choose between a whole series of delicious tapas that are slightly different than what you usually get served (see also the suggestions). It’s best to make reservations. May seem a bit expensive, but it's really worth it. Open from 5.30 PM to 10.30 PM

De Appelier is a restaurant that has been in Ghent since the eighties. They serve honest and delicious vegetarian meals for a good price and their backyard is perfect during sunny days. Booking a table in advance is a good idea, since it can be really busy. You can of course also opt for the take away.
