Hamilton Gardens is a public garden park in the south of Hamilton owned and managed by Hamilton City Council in New Zealand. The 54-hectare park is based on the banks of the Waikato River and includes enclosed gardens, open lawns, a lake, a nursery, a convention centre and the Hamilton East Cemetery. It is the Waikato region's most popular visitor attraction, attracting more than 1 million people and hosting more than 2,000 events a year. Hamilton Gardens is described in popular culture as a botanical garden, but does not technically qualify as a botanical garden. Instead, the site features 21 gardens representing the art, beliefs, lifestyles and traditions of different civilisations or historical garden styles. These gardens are grouped into the Paradise, Productive, Fantasy, Cultivar and Landscape garden collections, and there is space for gardens which are still in development. The first development of the gardens began in the early 1960s at what was then the city's waste disposal site. The first substantial development, the Rogers Rose Garden, was opened in 1971 in an attempt to block highway development over the site. Since 1982 many newly developed areas have been opened to the public. Additional features of the gardens now include a lake walkway and a waterfall lookout.

Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park is the flagship project for biodiversity in our city. This science-based, community-led project represents a vision of bringing back Hamilton’s native flora and fauna. Located on the outskirts of Hamilton, with access off Brymer Rd and Baverstock Rd, Waiwhakareke is an award-winning, intergenerational ecological restoration project. Waiwhakareke was established in 2004 with the long-term aim of reconstructing the natural forest, wetland and lake ecosystems present in pre-European times. Intensive predator control will allow vulnerable species to flourish in an urban environment and spill over to other parts of the city. The 65.5ha park will serve as a focus for Hamilton’s wider biodiversity restoration, including lakes and lakeshores, the Waikato River, its banks and unique gullies, and other parks with current or potential natural values (estimated to be 750 hectares).

The owner of the museum is Tom Andrews, he is a successful and hardworking Hamilton business entrepreneur, proud family man and lover of all things classic. Brought up in Melville he has lived here all his life. Tom decided he needed some more room to store his increasing collection of automobilia and classic cars. One of Tom’s first money-making ventures was fixing up cars as a teenager. This sparked a passion for automobilia and he has collected hundreds of pieces of old car-related artifacts such as by-the-gallon glass petrol pumps and early 20th century enameled Texaco signs. Tom started off building a ‘shed’ to house his expanding collection as it had well and truly outgrown his home. Classics Museum was the result and the museum now houses over 100 cars and is one of Hamilton's top tourist attractions. Tom runs the Classic Car Museum alongside his daughters Emily and Toni and his wife Diane.

Entertainment

This cinema is my local, a feature of the upmarket Centreplace mall in central Hamilton, where I get to see between 50-60 films a year. In earlier times, it housed the Village Showcase and the Rialto Hamilton but the latter closed its doors in mid-2009. In then re-emerged as the Lido Hamilton, a sister cinema to the Lido in Auckland. It is a lovely cinema, with a grand foyer. My beloved Josephine says the foyer reminds her of a very up-market bordello but I don't know why she would know about such places! It has all the touches you also find in the Auckland Lido--lovely furnishings (and bookcases), attentive young staff, a great range of refreshments, and a diverse film programme which focuses on art house titles--but also some mainstream films. It serves an older, discerning audience but like cinemas in other university cities, it hasn't yet cracked the student market. Hosts the NZ International Film Festival (and the BIg Film Quiz), along with other festivals such as the French FF, Show Me Shorts and the local film festival Misty Flicks. The Hamilton Film Society meets there on Monday nights at 7.30pm.

MOUNTAIN BIKES AND TREE WALK - The area, also referred to as "Redwood Memorial Grove",[1] is now protected and has become popular for recreational use, containing mountain bike tracks and the Redwoods Treewalk canopy walkway suspended between the trunks of the redwood trees.[3] Above the walkway, wooden lantern sculptures are also suspended between the tall tree trunks. At night time, these are lit up, and coloured spot lights illuminate some of the forest floor vegetation and tree ferns. The forest is also home to endangered species of birds such as the New Zealand Falcon, North Island Robin and occasionally Whitehead (bird). Since then, on the barren outskirts of the main forest where tourists go biking, hundreds of redwood saplings ranging in age from 1-5 years have been planted there to expand not just the forest but the living space of the animals that nest and live there.

Follow the Waterworks Walk to just before the dam where the track branches off to the right and climbs steeply up a well constructed set of steps and stairs. Be careful on the narrower parts of the Waterworks Walk between the waterfall and the stairs. Look and listen out for falling rocks and don’t stop on these sections, especially in bad weather. It is a 335 metre climb from Brownlee Avenue to the summit with 1,349 steps. The track meets the Hakarimata Walkway and the summit tower at 374 metres above sea level.
