Food scene

Great farm to table restaurant that is part of the Copake Country Club. Nora and I go to dinner here nearly every time we're up at Copake, and we like it so much that we're getting married here! Outdoor dining on the terrace overlooking the greens is a must. Fancier food than what you get at most places in the area, but a pretty casual vibe overall. The specials are often very good. They also serve a terrific burger with beef sourced from nearby Pigasso farms that is hard for us to pass up ordering every time we go. If you can time it right, the drive over from Robinson Pond to The Greens at sunset is a must, as the colors over Copake Lake are absolutely stunning.

For an option close to the house, this is a casual 50's style diner with a big menu that's sure to have something to please everyone in your group. Big portions and friendly service. Get the soft serve ice cream from the window out in the back.

Roe Jan Brewing is a new local brewery, with a large taproom and a full menu for lunch and dinner. Menu is mostly casual stuff (sandwiches, salads, burgers etc.) to keep your stomach full for the excellent beer. I'd recommend a couple of reasonably priced flights ($9 for 3 5-ounce tastings) and then after you've decided on a favorite, take home a 4 pack (we also have a growler in the kitchen you can get filled). Reservations are a must due to capacity constraints. You can book it on Resy.

When I first start dating Nora, we came up to Great Barrington in the Berkshires and I wanted to find a nice place to take her out for her birthday, and after a lot of research, I decided the Prairie Whale was the spot. We're from Brooklyn, and this place has a ton of Brooklyn cred as the people who run it are from Marlow and Sons and Diner. Simple, season, farm to table type menu. Awesome tavern on the inside and some nice picnic tables to eat outside (but bring your bug spray). If you're going to Great Barrington looking for a nice meal, this is the place.

If you're a fan of tea, than you know Harney and Sons. This is where they are based. The store has a great section of everything they do and they have a tea room with snacks and a number of their teas that you can order. Grab a Chai and take a walk on the rail trail

Great season farmers market, Saturday morning from 9am -1PM. Lots of dairy and meat (given the farms around the area). Some places will be serving food if you're hungry. Some craft providers. Right in the middle of Roe Jan Park which is also a beautiful place to take a walk.

Hiking

Easy local hike you can pick up from the Copake Iron Works area in Copake Falls. Mostly a gradual incline, 1+ miles out and you take the same trail back. Can get a little muddy, but otherwise not too challenging. You follow a stream along the way, but the falls at the end are a terrific payoff. Its a nice little excursion with a visit to the Historic Iron Works site.

The rail trail is an absolute must visit, for walking, running or biking. There's about 4 different spots you can grab that are near the house, but I recommend Copake Falls for proximity, parking and the fact that there's other sites to see nearby. The trail goes from Hillsdale down to Wassaic. Its pretty scenic further down by Undermountain Road/Boston corner and also runs right through the amazing town of Millerton. Can have rolling hills occasionally, but nothing too bad. Lots of meandering streams and mountains in the background. A fantastic thing for runners like Nora and I!

One of the most beautiful places in America to visit during the fall. Drive up the mountain if you just want to peep the leaves, and then drive the Mohawk trail after if you want more. For the hikers, this is quite a challenging incline with a lot of different ways to the top. I think I chose the hardest way so don't take my advice, definitely do a bit of research and pick on that matches your skill level. Up top its quite windy, but very beautful.

Sunset Rock is almost a secret gem in Taconic State Park. There's a few ways to get here. A short 1mi out and back involves driving through a road less traveled on the north part of Taconic State Park. The hike here is short, a little steep and very narrow. The other way involves parking at the Bash Bish falls trail over at Copake falls and crossing the street to go up the Cedar Brook Trail and connects to the South Taconic trail. This trail more like a 3-4 mi hike. Either way Sunset Rock is a beautiful spot without much traffic and a breathtaking view over the Hudson Valley with the Catskills looming over the background. Bring bug spray and be ready for the narrow path. The payoff is worth it!

This a terrific short hike that is an alternative to Bash Bish that is far less crowded. The main trail is quick 15 mins or so. Very well shaded. Mostly easy, with a bit of an incline that is very manageable for most. The "high" falls can be seen from a distance and there is a great viewing spot for a photo. There is another waterfall on the lower track that is also worth checking out that you can get closer to. This is located in the town of Philmont which has a great restaurant called Local 111. I'd take a later evening hike and then go into town for dinner.

Grocery Store

Closest store in town (other than the Gas Station convenience store). Closes a bit early like everything else, but carries a wide variety of goods if you're in a pinch. The best reason to go is the Brimstone Bakery breads that they carry. If you need something and its late, try the convenience store in the gas station across the street!

Random Harvest is a quirky general store/grocery store with a lot terrific local products. They carry a huge selection of items from nearby farms (Hawthorne Valley, Pigasso, Herondale) and bakeries (Our Daily Bread, Pieconic). If you're gluten free like Nora, they have a terrific selection of gluten free items. Not as big as a grocery store, but they carry a little bit of everything and you can do your shopping here, especially if you are focusing on eating local. They have a deli counter in the back with healthy fresh meals for lunch. The hours are a bit tricky so check on google or their instagram account before going!

Consejos para la ciudad

Facilidad para moverse por la casa

You're gonna want a car

While you can take a train to Wassaic or Hudson and book a taxi to the house (20 min ride), to enjoy the Hudson Valley you're gonna want a car as Ubers are not prevalent, local stores close earlier, and you won't want to miss the some of the sightseeing.
Qué debes empacar

Bug Spray and sun screen

The best part of the Hudson Valley is being outside, but like every where else there's bugs and sun, so make sure you're well equipped!
