Food scene

Literally just down the hill from Goonlaze Cottage! At 2 minutes walk this is the first place on the list. It’s a small but lively bar and restaurant open all year round. The atmosphere is laid back and casual with a good value, fixed price lunch menu of £7.50. There’s cosy spots inside and seating outside so you can take your dog. They often have live music on Friday or Saturday nights and everyone spills out all over the place. You can often enjoy the music from the comfort of the deck on summers evenings over a glass of wine. Telephone: 01872 553095

They are about 10 minutes walk from Goonlaze Cottage. They cook really good 12” pizzas with local ingredients, all with local names like ‘Wheal Jane’ etc. They’ll make your pizza while you wait or you can order them and then walk up to collect them. Tel: 01872 553092.

This place is described as a ‘Beach hut with a licence to chill’! And that is a good description!! Its about 6 minutes walk, along Quay Road – that is on the way to the beach. They have a reputation with the locals for serving the best coffee and great smoothies! They also offer sandwiches, salads, cakes, tapas. They are just about perfectly situated to have a snack or drink on the way between the cottage and Aggey beach. They are well worth a visit!

Great food and live music. On rainy days sit by the fire and enjoy the cosy ambience and on sunny days they're just near Trevaunance beach.

This is up in the village in ‘Churchtown’, about 8 minutes walk. It’s tucked away in the corner of the square opposite Churchtown Arts but you’ll normally see lots of people milling about chatting and waiting for their order. They serve reliably good food.

At 8 minutes walk just around the corner from Churchtown square this coffee shop was formerly post office and sorting room (since 1902). It has now been revamped as a coffee house serving locally sourced artisan coffee, freshly baked pastries, cakes and other nutritious & delicious treats. Tel: 07807 324088

Amazing lunches for £5 and they are just 10 mins up the hill from Goonlaze Cottage, in Wheal Kitty Workshops. This is absolutely my favourite place to have lunch. Get there early or risk missing out!

Sightseeing

The Beach and the Cafe! Tucked away on the next beach up is the National Trust Beach and Café at Chapel Porth. There is no indoor seating but the food is so good it’s well worth walking an appetite up or even just popping over there! Their epic ‘hedgehog’ ice creams are famous locally; a concoction of Cornish ice cream, clotted cream and hazelnuts. It’s about 8 minutes drive and there is parking – free for National Trust members.

The beach is about 15 mins walk (10 mins there and 20 back because of the hill!). There are life guards from early May to the end of September. There are plenty of places to eat, get ice creams and drinks close to the beach. There are two carparks (both charge) if you are taking wetsuits and beach equipment. Dogs are allowed all year on leads. I would recommend going down near low tide if you can; at that time there is more beach and all the rock pools and caves are accessible. If the tide is low you can often walk round to Trevellas Porth – but do keep an eye on the tide! You can walk back to the cottage from Trevellas Porth over-land making a nice circular walk.

This is a more rugged and wild beach but great to explore. There are mine workings in the valley and Blue Hills Tin Streams is a working tin mine that runs tours. There are no cafes, shops or lifeguards at this beach but there is parking. It’s a very steep drive down to the carpark – so steep I prefer to walk! Dogs are allowed all year. It’s about 25 mins walk from the cottage.

I love Eden! It's a great place to visit even if it's raining. It's a really unique space and there's more to it than just plants - including a zip wire, educational information, shop and great cafe.

Just the most amazing place to watch a play or music. Try to get an evening slot so you can watch the sunset! Pack some blankets to cover your legs in case of chilly evening coastal breeze!

Rogue Theatre This is ‘immersive theatre’ at it’s best and a great experience, especially for children. It’s a magical, musical story that leads you through the woods in Tehidy. They have a Wildwood Summer Ball which is wonderful fun and sometimes they do a Wild Wood Kitchen where you bake bread and make lasagne or stew over camp fires. I would highly recommend all of their magical experiences. Tickets are great value. You can find more details at: https://rogueotherworld.co.uk
