Breakfast, Coffee, Brunch, lunch and tea

These are my personal and family favourites. Places we go to as often as we can! All for different reasons, but all of a very high standard. I really love my food, and I don't bother going out to eat unless I am going to feel better for it!
Daily Bread serves the best, exceptional, flat white, (with oat milk) delicious breakfast, lunch and tea. You can buy most of the menu to take away. A variety of breads made on the premises are included in the meals, but also available to buy by the loaf Wednesday to Thursday. The bacon is home cured, ketchup, crumpets and pancakes homemade. My favourite cake is Chocolate Guinness, but there is always a good choice of cakes and other bakes also made in-house. I love the mushrooms and Tarragon on toast, really flavoursome, and of course the poached eggs, avocado and harissa on toast, with or without bacon or chicken. Plenty of seating inside, but I recommend the garden, walled, which is a sun trap and beautifully planted. In it stands an old small brick outbuilding, which is the bakery. Good wifi, a cool place to work or meet for work or social gathering. Before lockdown they hosted Boardgame Beer and Burger evenings, and Quiz nights, and also wonderful seasonal events and the odd course. Hopefully this will happen again one day soon. My partner describes Daily Bread as serving 'Thoughtful food, reasonably priced'.

Fast Food for the Quick Fix

If you need a quick fix it needs to be really close! So these places are all 2 or 3 minutes walk away and sell good (enough or better than) food quickly.
Just brilliant when you are ravenous to pop round the corner, 2 minutes walk from Fern Hollow, and get a portion of chips, maybe with fish. Or a kebab, I love the vegetarian one for its freshness but sometimes a bit too much onion! Or the chicken kebab is also good for those who mind less where their meat comes from. While you wait you can pop into the One Stop for a bottle of Prosecco to go with it, or a beer or any other provisions you might need.

I don't go here so often, as I am not so keen on pizza. However its not bad, delivers to the door or you can walk a little further than the fish and chip shop to get it! Good value pizza, but I am just as happy/disappointed with a pizza from the One Stop and it takes about the same time to buy it and pop it in the oven for much less.

This is just across the High Street from my house, and sells a good selection of breads, sourdough included. Sells good coffee to take away! Also sells, which is why its in this section, sandwiches (not so keen to be honest), pies, cakes, and biscuits and pastries. And eggs.

Food scene

These are very special places to eat, and worth checking availability.
3 minutes walk from Fern Hollow. Apparently built in the 14th century, the Klein Blue decor is incongruous to say the least but strangely refreshing! Very good fresh food cooked on the premises, reasonable prices. Good selection of gin!

This place is stunning! The Beacon has an incredible menu, seasonal, crafted delicious food. Going here is more than just going out for a meal, it is an experience. The former Arts and Crafts private home is set on a ridge overlooking Happy Valley, within its own 17 acres of woodland, lakes and gardens. There is an extensive and beautiful outdoor dining area with this amazing view. However inside is also a feast for the eyes, an elegant but quirky interior, designed to be comfortable. If you would like to eat here you absolutely must book. The Beacon is also a wedding venue. From Fern Hollow you can walk there in 10 minutes, directly across the common, or take a small detour through the woods to the top of Happy Valley and see the sandstone outcrops on the way.

I have only eaten here once but would like to again. A half hour walk from Fern Hollow, and it has a grotto in the entrance! A very beautiful real bit of rock!

Picturesque Short Walks from Fern Hollow

Happy Valley is one of my favourite places to walk. There is a lovely circuit which takes about 30-45 mins to walk, through the common. Happy Valley is a wooded valley with a sandstone outcrop.

There are various sandstone outcrops locally and this is probably the most famous, 15 minutes walk from Fern Hollow. I love scampering around the rock formations scattered around 'Toad Rock' with the kids, looking at how the rocks nestle together and form corridors and caves, and see how the trees grow in and around them rooted into deep crevices. at the base of the rocks is basically a huge sandpit. There is also a very good pub called The Rock Retreat, good food, which also on a Tuesday evening has a Pizza van parked outside, and is known for getting in live bands regularly.

Walking into Tunbridge Wells across the common and past the cricket grounds you'll find Wellington Rocks rising out tof the meadows. These rocks are great to get kids confidently scrambling around, and maybe leaping over the gaps and bounding from rock to rock, and they are not leg wobblingly high! visibility is good and not to many startling precipices! Takes about 35 minutes to walk there. There is often a little van parked by the cricket ground selling tea, coffee and homemade snacks too.

High Rocks is a stunning spot, another sandstone outcrop, with steps and bridges creating a victorian follyesque scene. A beautiful place to have a picnic, or in fact wedding!
