Food scene

Delicious food and old Florida ambiance under a giant banyan tree. Arrive early or expect to wait, but great setting to make the time pass. Cash bar in back courtyard with live music, tire swing, and group seating. Order bites from the bar inside and enjoy them outside, by a fire in winter.

You read it right. The most authentic Mexican food is usually found in a gas station. Eat-in or carry-out, it's my favorite go-to for lunch or dinner. $1.25 hard tacos are my jam, with a side of spanish rice.

If you are going to get ice cream in Sarasota, make the trip here for truly hand-made, home-crafted creamy goodness. Started by the original founder of Big Olaf's, its the original recipes you cannot get even at today's Big Olaf's. Try the home-made waffle cones. Oh yeah! It's also the only place to buy fresh pastries from Der Dutchman Amish Bakery. Have kids, ask to get your dish unicorn-style.

Sightseeing

Known as Sunset Point and popular gathering spot for locals at sunset. Public parking can be found behind Siesta Market. Walk down Avenida Messina from Ocean Blvd to where it dead ends at the beach. There is no parking at the beach, only 1 handicap spot and a bike rack. You'll find a flag pole erected on an old breaker installed by the US Army Corp of Engineers to help secure the beach sand along Siesta Key. Locals host a ceremony just before sunset every evening lowering the flag and honoring veterans. A must do, at least once.

Siesta Beach has been recognized as America's #1 Beach. Partly due to its powdery, white sand that is 99% quartz and doesn't burn your bare feet, and partly due to the beautifully designed pavilion and surrounding facilities. Join the Drum Circle starting an hour before sunset every Sunday.

Siesta Key's famous snorkeling and fishing spot is a rare geological feature where Florida's limestone base is exposed at the coastline, providing a reef-like environment for a diverse population of marine wildlife. If you're not up for swimming, try paddling over the rocks on a kayak. Located just south of Public Beach Access 13. No car parking, only a bike rack. Closest public parking is at Beach Access 12.

Great place to see many protected species, some only found in Florida. Varied ecosystems including scrub habitat and freshwater systems. On one trail visit, I observed Bald Eagles, Scrub Jays, tons of Gopher Tortoise, woodpeckers, and so many more. Lots of hiking trails, some parts can be biked. Nice campground near small creek. Access to Legacy Trail (rail-to-trail), which runs through park and continues south to Venice, Florida.
