Marvelous place just a few minutes from the house. Incorporates a beautiful ruin of a house that was burned down many years ago but restored just enough to afford fantastic views. The main building houses a gallery, lecture room and private meeting places for a variety of fascinating talks and events. I met Gloria Steinem (Ms Magazine) last time I was there!

Sightseeing

Curious, fun historic places, not necessarily on the main tourist drag.
Charming little place where you can hop onto the train to Los Angeles if you're so inclined! There's a busy bar and a little cafe almost on the tracks where you can get a snack like avacado toast. Visit the 19th century carriage on the grounds. There are often live music performances in the shade near the station.

Hiking

Really lovely area for walking. There are never many people there. Entrance is free and the views are spectacular. Lovely for a picnic, horse or bike ride.

If you love to hike through narrow canyons and have a relatively easy climb up to the top for a marvelous view, Tent Rocks is easily accessible and only an hour's drive from Eldorado. There's a nice gift shop at the base. The walk is an easy ascent through very narrow rocky channels, surrounded by white, tent-like formations that end in sharp peaks - hence the name. Great for adults and kids. At 4pm you must start your descent.

Neighborhoods

A great day trip from my home is to drive down the Turquoise Trail through the fascinating small town of Los Cerillos to Madrid. Los Cerillos is like a lost movie set, but it's genuine. There is an amazing museum of historic artifacts, which is rarely open but if it is, it's well worth a visit. Spend an hour or so wondering the few streets, have a meal, take a pony ride. People watching is the most fun - real cowboys and cowladies abound. Drive on to Madrid - a super cute artists' colony with funky houses, lots of interesting shops and restaurants and a great annual music festival.

In my opinion, the art to be found on Canyon road is vastly overrated. It is a very charming street, with many galleries and restaurants, but my favorite place there is Santa Kilim, run by a Moroccan family. It's like walking into Aladin's Cave. The Tea House is an excellent restaurant.

An easy drive north from Eldorado, Nambe Pueblo is a small Native American community set in a very pretty landscape. At certain times of the year, visitors are permitted to attend special festivals, such as Epiphany on January 6, where you can witness a truly traditional ceremony combined with Christian attributes left over from the Spanish occupation. The very charming and well curated Nambe Trading Post is well worth a visit.

A very cool fairly new area frequented by our younger population. There are many studios featuring pottery, glass blowing and other artisanal activities, as well as original boutiques and my favorite restaurant, Culture Counter, where you can choose to eat indoors or outdoors. Baca is funky, unique, young and lively.

The house where you are staying is located in the area known as Eldorado at Santa Fe - the name is a little pretentious but the landscape is juniper high desert and affords many opportunities for outdoors activities such as walking, biking and hiking either in the residential area or in the specially designated hiking areas.

Western lifestile

I have not been there myself, but in June, there is a full-fledged rodeo with bull riding, wrangling and other traditional sports.

Consignment stores

I discovered that Santa Fe has many really diverse furniture and accessories consignment stores as well as many top-notch contemporary design shops. I love The Raven ( see my sofa), the Consignment warehouse and Congeries, but there are many others to explore. Even if you're not buying, they are fun places to visit and in many ways, reflect the history of the local community from antique furniture to the most modern.
