Locavore is the most famous restaurant in Ubud if not in Indonesia. Having won a host of awards, this is the place to come if you want to try some of the best fusion of Indonesian made with Western techniques. But you will need to book well in advance if you are hoping for a reservation, the waiting list can be long! As the name would suggest, Locavore is all about ‘local’. From the raw Balinese abalone to the Sumbawa Island oyster and even through to the plates, silverware and cocktail glasses, all made in nearby workshops. Their commitment to sustainability is very strong. Guests can choose from the ‘locavore’ or the vegetarian ‘herbivore’ option; each is influenced by European and Indonesian cuisines. Plates might include fermented dadap leaves with long bean lawar, bumbu Bali and crispy amaranth leaves (or ‘Are they really called stinky beans…?) with petai, caramelised green tomato, fermented shiitake mushroom and fermentation juice. Famous dishes include smoked catfish and pork. The only import are the chefs, Eelke Plasmeijer and Ray Adriansyah from Holland, and their locally inspired meals can stretch to nine courses and usually last upwards of three hours!! You can also choose dishes paired with wines to make sure you get the best out of your meal. Visit their website: http://locavore.co.id/

One of the local legends in Ubud is the Alchemy Cafe where you will find some of the best raw and vegan food on the island. Another famous restaurants in Ubud is called Bebek Bengil which translates as the ‘Dirty Duck’. The restaurant backs on to pretty rice paddies and the story goes that when the restaurant was being built a group of ducks waddled through and gave the building its name. Tegallalang rice terrace is one of the most beautiful rice paddies in Bali. For many visitors to the country, this is the highlight of their trip. It is famous for its scenic landscape, where travellers to Ubud often stop by for snapshots of an iconic Balinese view. Located on a hillside, in beautiful wave like layers with gorgeous panoramic views, you can walk around the terraces, watch the farmers working on the field or even learn how to plant and harvest rice. current method of irrigation is know as Subak and goes back at least a 1,000 years. Besides being practical, (rice is a staple food in Bali), it is an integral part of their culture, as it has religious significance because rice is seen as a gift from the gods, and on a daily basis you will witness the Balinese using rice to make ‘offerings’ outside their homes and places of business. It is located in the center of the city and dates from the 1800s when it was built during the reign of Ida Tjokorda Putu Kandel.
