Groceries

Nestors: Dollarton Village (go up Bakerview, term left onto Dollarton Highway and go one block. On the right) Nestors is a great small grocery store. Perfect for getting a few items to get set up. If you are doing a big shop, the prices are likely higher than Safeway and certainly more than Superstore. A nice shopping experience and great selection of fruits, vegetable and most items. Safeway at Parkgate Village 1175 Mount Seymour Road Good for full grocery shop as they have most items you might require during your stay. Prices will be about 10-15% more than Superstore but Superstore is so big that for a few items you will walk so much . Superstore:(333 Seymour Boulevard) Open 7 am to 11pm Great prices. Worth it if doing a big purchase. But so big that it takes a long time to shop. They have an online option where you can oder online and then go and pick up. Pharmacies: Shoppers Drug Mart at Parkgate Village (by Safeway), Safeway Parkgate Village, SuperStore Liquor Store: Best prices at Dollarton Village BC Liquor Store. Small liquor stores: Parkgate Village and Raven Pub. Expensive. DryCleaners: Parkgate

Food scene

In terms of eats and food nearby, you have a few choices. 1.5 Blocks Dollarton Village (5 min walk) Cove Sushi- (http://covesushi.blogspot.com/p/menu.html) in general has great Japanese food and all restaurants have a pretty high bar to get over in order to stay in business. This place is steady and maybe middle of the pack but don't read that to mean its just ok. You will be very happy choosing to either eat in or order. We usually order and just enjoy the view from our place. Decor and ambience is fine but not amazing. Nektars Pizza and Greek Food- (nektars.ca.index.html) Lots of people are big fans of the pizza and their Greek food. Full disclosure is that I haven't eaten in but I have tried their pizza. Scratch Kitchen (www.eatscratchkitchen.com) New look and ownership. Scratch Kitchen is a local Deep Cove joint that’s here to instigate a little fun. Driven by a passion to bring guests a “made from scratch” experience with fresh ingredients, local brews, and a vibe to reawaken an at-times sleepy corner of the city, two Vancouver-based restaurant veterans are joining forces to take a crack at their own venture on the Shore." Menu looks fantastic with healthy choices including pizza and salad and healthy bowls. Nestors Market- A fantastic small grocery store that has virtually everything. I love these types of stores compared to big box. Yes its more expensive and for a big shop choose Costco (20 min drive) or Superstore (8 min drive), but its always a nice experience. The manager is a very friendly and helpful fellow and I know him because one of our daughters worked there during High School. Ask for him and tell him Emily Hodgins dad said good things about him! They have a nice in store bakery, deli, cold cuts, good cheeses, meat section and good supply of organic fruits and vegetables. Note that in Canada we can't buy Alcohol in stores- the good news is that the liquor store is right next door. Impt tip. In Canada we tax alcohol and cigarettes quite high (with free health care if you decide to smoke or drink, the taxes you pay will finance your future health care bills - or thats the theory)so if you like wine, bring couple of bottles per adult (which is the allowable limit) from the US in particular. Its about twice as expensive here. Other than Dollarton Village, the next food choices are in Deep Cove (22 min walk or 5 min drive). I will elaborate on those choices in another post to the guidebook.

Sightseeing

Canada Place is where you will always see people and activity. During summer months, the cruise ships dock at Canada Place and they are a beautiful sight in themselves set against the sails of Canada Place and the view towards the North Shore mountains. I really enjoy the film show and experience of Wings over Canada at Canada Place. It’s a film but you are on a seat that moves and sways and you really feel like you are a bird flying over Niagra Falls, an iceberg, a prairie wheat field or the Pacific Ocean.

Walk along Seawall from Canada Place to the Sea Place Terminal by Canada Place and on to Coal Harbour Quay. At Coal Harbour you will find Cardero’s Restaurant. Very nice place for a drink or food. Or just peak insde for a quick look. I usual end up scoping out a gelato place around Cardero’s.

From Cardero’s continue on towards Stanley Park. If the weather is nice, renting bikes from the intersection of Georgia and Denman and take the Seawall around Stanley Park. It is about 6 miles or 10km. You can rent electric bikes to make the distance easy to cover. You can also drive around Stanly Park. Head west in the right lane as you go west on Georgia Street. Take the Stanley Park Exit. You can drive through the park. There are plenty of stops and opportunities to take in the scenic views. Grouse Mountain- Take the gondola for amazing views of the city as long as the clouds aren’t covering the mountain tops. In winter there is skiing and skating. In summer, there is a fantastic lumberjack show which we have always thoroughly enjoyed. Be sure to see the grizzly bears who are in an enclosed natural habitat. I am always amazed by their size and how impressive they are to see up close. Such powerful creatures.

Kits Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Vancouver especially in the warm summer months. Located at the north edge of the Kitsilano neighbourhood, the beach faces out on to English Bay. The beach is home to the longest swimming pool in Canada, the salt-water outdoor Kitsilano Pool. Open annually from May to September. This is a great low cost way to spend a day during summer months with Granville Island and many nearby interesting places to add on to a day by the pool. Toward the northern edge of the beach is a playground and a number of beach volleyball courts.

Robson Street is packed with stores and restaurants, from Granville Street to Jervis Street. Home to over 100 shops, it's also the epicenter of Downtown Vancouver's shopping district. Within short walking distance of Robson are the department stores The Bay (Hudson Bay Company), Nordstrom and Holt Renfrew, as well as the only mall in Downtown Vancouver, the indoor Pacific Centre Mall (at Robson and Granville). One block north of Robson Street--and running parallel to it--is Alberni Street, home to high-end luxury brands like Gucci and Christian Dior (sometimes referred to as Vancouver's "Luxury Zone").

Oceanfront English Bay centers on one of the city's loveliest and busiest beaches. Part of the West End neighborhood, English Bay offers shopping and high-end restaurants, but is also a popular outdoor area where people come to walk, bike, rollerblade, or hang out with the public art installations. The biggest event comes in summer when thousands crowd the shores to watch three nights of fireworks set to music. Tons of people but a great event and lots of fun. Budget friendly! Another popular event is the New Year's Day Polar Bear Swim, when hardy swimmers take a dip in the chilly Pacific waters.
