Shopping

Shopping for local specialty food items, presents and out of the ordinary souvenirs or just plain grocery shopping.
There is a lot to see and do in Amsterdam, all depending on your taste. If we were in the neighborhood, you could run into us and other locals at Kef (5-10 min walk) at Czaar Peterstraat. Best cheese shop in Amsterdam. If you love cheese, buy here. NEVER buy at some Old Amsterdam cheese shop in the city center or at the airport.

There is a lot to see and do in Amsterdam, all depending on your taste. If we were in the neighborhood, you could run into us and other locals at the small shopping center “Brazilië” at Oostelijke Handelskade (5 min walk). It has a Jumbo supermarket (cheaper), Albert Heijn supermarket (more expensive and fancier), Etos and Kruidvat drugstores, butcher, bakery (meh, Albert Heijn is better), liquor store, etc. o Tip 1: try some great Dutch herring, the famous street snack, at the fish store right here. Or get their also good “kibbeling” (fried cod) with sauce. o Tip 2: the Dutch street snack is of course french fries, to be bought at a snack bar. The snack bar “Kwalitaria” in the shopping center is the real deal. Make sure to get mayonaise on your fries, or peanut sauce. OR BOTH. Seriously. It’s called ‘patat oorlog’ (war fries) and comes with sprinkled raw onion (optional).

There is a lot to see and do in Amsterdam, all depending on your taste. If we were in the neighborhood, you could run into us and other locals at the Javastraat in the Indische Buurt neighborhood (15 min walk). Rapidly gentrifying and trendy, but still ethnically and economically mixed neighborhood. Great and cheap Turkish breakfast buffet every day at Mesken, corner Javastraat / Sumatrastraat.

Drinking & nightlife

Bars and beers.
There is a lot to see and do in Amsterdam, all depending on your taste. If we were in the neighborhood, you could run into us and other locals at Brouwerij ’t IJ on Funenkade (15 min walk). Local craft beer since the 1980s. And it’s in a windmill, doesn’t get more Dutch than that. The tasting room is open daily from 2pm until 8pm. Lots of tourists nowadays, but also many locals because the beer is great and relatively cheap. Locals show up after work hours, i.e. 6pm.

There is a lot to see and do in Amsterdam, all depending on your taste. If we were in the neighborhood, you could run into us and other locals at Roest. If the weather is nice, nothing beats Amsterdam Roest (5-10 min walk) at Jacob Bontiusplaats. At an old factory location, Roest has a pseudo beach area, a rough edged arty atmosphere and plenty of cold drinks.
