Bracing walks

These walks explore Devon's footpaths and ancient trackways, which are generally well signposted. They are likely to involve mud, farm animals and little, if any, traffic.
The beacon is a moderate hike from The Roost and a great way to build an appetite for a pub lunch in Culmstock. There are great views and flat walls on the top in heath and woods. The historic beacon hut dates from the Armada and is reminder of more troubled times. The views to Exmoor and of the Culm Valley are amazing.

By far, the walk most favoured by our guests. The 16th Century Armada beacon hut is perched on the end of a long flat hilltop common with numerous paths and circular walks. From the edge of the hill and the Beacon there are views of fields and villages for miles around. Park your car at the edge of the common, or hike across the valley from The Roost. But be sure to drop down into Culmstock village for a refreshing pint and lunch at the Culm Valley Inn.

The Roman city of Exeter has a historic cathedral and city walls. The quayside is worth a visit. The modern city centre has all of the national stores but Ghandi Street has fascinating quirky independent shops and restaurants. For a different experience, try the Underground Passages.

Dunkeswell Airfield is an active flying centre just a short drive from The Roost. In Summer 2024 it again hosts two Spitfires operating flight experiences and they often fly right over us at The Roost. Listen for the evocative sound of their engines overhead, or watch close up from the cafe next to the runway. Their is also a fascinating small museum describing the construction and operation by the US Air Force in the Second World War.

Our favourite beach on the North Devon surfing coast. It is just round the headland from the famous but busy Croyde Bay and is the 'quiet' end of massive Woolacombe Beach. There is good surf, flat sand, rock pools, parking and a beach cafe.

Unlike its busy neighbour, Lyme Regis, Beer is a small shingly beach that is just stunning. There is a great pub next to the beach but eating your Fish and Chips next to the lapping water is a brilliant way to chill away an evening.

Easy walks

This historic canal has a peaceful towpath for cycling or flat walking. It is lovely to meander through the countryside and stop off at nearby pubs. A good venue for canoeing or paddle boarding too!

A riverside path that starts at the Culm Valley Inn in Culmstock follows the route of the dismantled railway 3 miles to Uffculme. On your way, you pass through Hunkin Wood that we planted for the Millennium and which is now a fully grown wildlife refuge. Along the path, watch for Heron and Kingfisher as well as signs of Otter. You are also likely to encounter friendly sheep and cattle.

The nearest pub to The Roost is situated in the centre of Hemyock, next to the ancient church. You can drive there in a few minutes, or 20 minutes walk by green lane. Good food and beer, snug bar and a front bar with pool table.
