Margaret Island (Margitsziget) is the green heart of Budapest. It lies in the middle of the Danube between Margaret Bridge and Árpád Bridge. Apart from a couple of hotels and sport facilities, there are no buildings on the island - it is a huge green park with promenades and benches, great for a date or a picnic. Everyone can find their own cup of tea here: there is the Hajós Alfréd National Sports Swimming Pool, the Palatinus water park and the running track for the sporty, the petting zoo, the music fountain, and the Water Tower for families, and we'd recommend the Japanese Garden or a ride on a four-wheel bike for couples. If you're hungry for culture, check out the open-air stages and the medieval ruins of the island.

It is a popular destination among hikers, mountain bikers, runners, Nordic walkers, and families. On top of János Hill stands the Erzsébet Lookout Tower, built in 1910, whence you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the city. In clear weather you can see as far as 80 kilometers away, and locals claim that in certain atmospheric conditions even the peaks of the High Tatra Mountains are visible in the distance. Take bus 291 from the Nyugati Railway Station, and when reaching the last stop, change for the Chairlift, which will take you up the hill, to the vicinity of the Lookout Tower.

Following the establishment of similar museums in London, Vienna and Berlin, and upon realizing the importance of handicrafts and industrial design, the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest was founded by the Hungarian Parliament in 1872.
From the start, the Museum has collected applied art works contemporary and historical, from Hungary and abroad. Its collections have come from several sources.
The Museum of Applied arts has several dazzling masterpieces from the treasury of one of the wealthiest aristocratic families in Hungary, the Esterházys. Gold- and silverware, Turkish weapons, old Hungarian aristocratic costume and jewelry and many unique art works give a flavor of the lifestyle of the Hungarian aristocracy and its wealth.
