There are several of the old Plantation Homes still around, and most are about an hours drive away. With some you can catch a tour bus from the French Quarter and back.
With any of these, expect it to take at least 4-5 hours of your day up, but they are nice to see. Unless you are in NOLA for 5 days or more, I would probably skip them, because there is so much to do in the city. But if you decide to go, Houmas House is our favorite. This is the standout, because not only do you get a wonderful home to tour, but also some very extensive gardens. Two other popular homes are San Francisco and Oak Alley.
