Neighborhoods

Hi-Pointe is a tiny “neighborhood” within Dogtown. Most locals think our house is located in Dogtown. While that’s technically true our home is also located within the award winning Hi-Pointe neighborhood. We have a very active Facebook community that keeps us up to date on all things in Dogtown. We have the second largest Mardi Gras parade within St. Louis. Dogtown was originally the site of major mining activity within St. Louis. Some neighbors report there are tunnels within their basements. Don’t worry ours isn’t one of them. But the area is responsible for the rise of our brick city. Although not all homes are built with St. Louis clay we have one of the richest clay deposits within the United States. As you drive through St. Louis neighborhoods during your stay, you’ll see many of these brick homes. In fact, frame homes in St. Louis are not that common, at least the 1880’s - 1940’s era homes. Most of my real estate clients that buy in St. Louis city are looking for that classic old world feel. Many don’t realize that the frame homes of Dogtown are there because of the mining that took place. Dogtown is one of the least consistent neighborhoods when it comes to architecture. Our home was built in 1926 according to the tax records. During the height of the mining of the clay and coal mines.

Food scene

Less than a mile away (you can walk if you like) Parker’s table has sooo many selections when it comes to alcohol. If they have it in stock I recommend Vitus from the world’s oldest brewery.

The chef doesn’t talk much, won’t look you in the eye, but I promise you won’t mind if you love authentic Korean food. This restaurant is one of the hidden secrets of the loop located just on the west end on Enright - not on Delmar. I get the Bibimbop when I get the chance to go.

If you’re going to site see the Arch, Old Courthouse, Lacledes Landing, War Memorial etc… This is the only grocery store Downtown. Just a heads up! ;)

The food is meh, but if you’re a root beer fan like me. You should check out Fitz Root Beer.

Sightseeing

Most people reach out and say they plan on visiting the City Museum. There’s no free parking downtown. They occasionally close without notice - check their website before you head down. This is a 15 min drive from our house. You’ll spend more time at the lights than actually driving - if you hit all greens it’s about 10 mins.

Convenience Stores

I know you’ll likely just google these but I have a few tips for getting around.
If you google, you’ll likely get the Manchester location. Time wise it’s further away - go to this one instead. When you leave go out on the north side of the parking lot and take a right. If you don’t both exits make you turn away from the house. (Assuming you’re going back to our place.) Take the alley and the first right onto the street. Then take the left onto Clayton.

If you’re grabbing gas this is the best one because it’s easiest to get to. From the house make a right off of west park, then a left at Clayton, grab a pump on the left most side, then you can easily get back on Clayton and make a right onto McCauseland. This might be odd to add to the guide book - but trust me the other gas stations that are close are a pain to get out of. Consejos para la ciudad

General St. Louis Travel

I-64: Highway farty (please don’t judge us for the misuse of the English language.) McCauseland changes street names 4 times depending on where you’re at. If you’re going downtown your last exit is Soulard. Don’t miss it because it’s a 40 minute turnaround to get back on the Missouri side. If you’re going to a ball game the meters are free on Sunday, city police don’t typically give tickets after 6:00 pm. Don’t pay $40 to park just grab a meter pay for the 2 hours and it’ll cost you $15 instead.

Stadium Parking

My favorite place to park when going downtown for a ball game is on 9th street. It’s a 1 way street going south that puts you on the I-64 East Ramp. If you park at Clark and 9th there are 4-5 meters. Save the hassle of a parking garage and beat the traffic.

Zoo Parking

You can walk from our house, we did it when we first moved in. We found parking on Oakland by Turtle Park was easiest. It’s not a secret - so it might be hard to find a spot. But the zoo is a 5 min walk from there. It’s so much easier than driving Forest Park for a spot to go to the Zoo or paying for parking.

Laclede’s Landing

One of my past clients owns the “Cast Iron” Building located on 2nd street. He has past land titles back to Pierre Laclede, one of the founders of St. Louis in 1763. If you want to see historic sites this is one of them. Park on one of the meters at Dr. ML King and First. You can site see Lacledes Landing and visit the Arch grounds.

Central West End Parking

There’s lots of meters in the CWE. But this is primarily a residential area and one of the oldest parts of St. Louis. My recommendation if you want to see historic homes in this location. Park on one of the residential streets that don’t require permit parking. Mcpherson (east of Taylor) is a good street. Or Pershing closer to Taylor. Then of course check one of the many restaurants.
