Sightseeing

Even if you're not going to see a show, meandering in and around the Opera House is a visual performance in itself. I saw a karate tournament in the concert hall once, so you never know what you might find! Watch the entire Sydney light up with a myriad of colours between 26 May and 17 June 2017 as Vivid Sydney returns for another year!

The Bridge is the Everest of attractions. Climb it. My friends bought me a bridge climb for my birthday, and it was one of the best experiences of my life! Catching the ferry to Kirribilli and then walking back over the bridge makes for a lovely round trip.

With The Rocks, the trick is to get up the hill and into its little alleyways as soon as possible. Put your guidebook in your back pocket and get deliberately lost - the cobblestones will do the thinking for you. Glenmore Hotel on Cumberland st has one of the best rooftop bars in Sydney.

It's great to get a birds eye view of just how expansive Sydney is. From Sydney Tower Eye you can see all the way to the Blue Mountains and watch the storm clouds roll in from the south... They hold Wednesday morning yoga classes on the observation deck. $25pp, breakfast included.

Entertainment & Activities

When it comes to visiting families, Taronga Zoo would be the first recommendation of almost every Sydneysider — it's both a local and tourist favourite. Here you can make friends with a koala or lay eyes on threatened species, all the while enjoying a spectacular view of the Sydney Harbour.

Located in one of the city's most photographed locations, Luna Park charms with old world carnival vibes and is a delight for both adults and children. Originally built in 1935, Luna Park may not be the flashiest or biggest amusement park — but it certainly feels quite special, day or night. Entry is free but you must buy tickets for rides. Active families should consider buying an Unlimited Rides Pass ahead of time. Luna Park is not open every day, so make sure to check the website ahead of your visit.

Great venue to watch the Sydney Swans play. The atmosphere with the supporters is amazing. Good for families. Kick to kick at the end of the game is definitely great for the kids.

Drinks & Nightlife

Hard to find but worth it once you arrive. Quirky little bar with a great atmosphere and a huge range of whisky - they have a nice range of cocktails too. Fantastic bartenders and the pretzels are a great touch.

Vibrant Caribbean-themed bar on the Clarence Street. Really cool and friendly staff serving more than 300 types of rum. Amazing ambience and even the washrooms have a character. Sitting up at the bar is the best spot to enjoy the pyrotechnic display of bartenders setting fire to cinnamon sticks...

The venue, popular for Saturday-night dance parties, randomly swings between super-exclusive and super-not, and some nights attract a cover charge, but this place was made for people with money to burn – think Entourage meets Miami Vice. Free entry before 10pm.

Food Scene

This is one of the best places to go for breakfast or brunch in Sydney. Amazing food and ambience. It was nice to walk around the food stalls, visit the "pets" (pig, sheep, goat) and go shopping in market place nearby. If you like shopping, there are outlets nearby.

This one is a Sydney favourite and the line can be long. Its popular with visitors and locals alike. The pancake stacks are yummy and very filing and we had the beef ribs too. Prices are about right and the service is quite good. Worth the wait.

Parks & Nature

Walking through the gardens and along the seawall is such a relaxed and quiet way to start your city experience - breathe in the harbour air and the trees as you go. Don't miss the St George Open Air cinema during January and February. The screen is set on pylons in the water, with the Opera house, Harbour bridge and city skyline as a backdrop.

Everything seems so playfully hedonistic here that even swimming seems like a chore. It is THE place in Sydney for 'people watching' - so much so that even the surfers spend a lot of time on their boards watching one another. Gelbison Pizzeria on Lamrock Avenue has been feeding the local population for the last 25 years. We are talking seriously good Risotto here! See the coastal walk transformed into a 2km long temporary sculpture park featuring over
100 sculptures by artists from Australia and across the world between October and November every year!

Even if you've lived here all your life, taking the ferry to Manly and back remains a classic experience. Passing between north and south head, the open sea meets the harbour and you can literally feel the swell rise. Manly itself is like the Bondi of the north, but with less attitude. Except when it comes to surfing - which Manlyites claim was invented there!
