Waiotapu is an active geothermal area at the southern end of the Okataina Volcanic Centre, just north of the Reporoa caldera, in New Zealand's Taupo Volcanic Zone. It is 27 kilometres south of Rotorua.
Explore spectacular nature at New Zealand’s most colourful volcanic area. Enjoy viewing unique volcanic features as you walk at your own pace along well defined tracks. First class Visitor Centre with retail and cafe facilities.

Waiotapu is an active geothermal area at the southern end of the Okataina Volcanic Centre, just north of the Reporoa caldera, in New Zealand's Taupo Volcanic Zone. It is 27 kilometres south of Rotorua.
Explore spectacular nature at New Zealand’s most colourful volcanic area. Enjoy viewing unique volcanic features as you walk at your own pace along well defined tracks. First class Visitor Centre with retail and cafe facilities.
Hot 'n' Cold, also known to locals as The Secret Spot or The Bridge, is a great place to relax and soak. Sit in the naturally heated stream and relax by the banks while enjoying the scenery all for free. The hot water upstream mixes with cooler water from the river and creates the perfect temperature – move around to the find the right spot just for you.
How to get there: Heading south from Rotorua (about 40 km) look out for the signpost marked 'Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland' on your left. Take the second entrance 500 metres down from the signpost. A further 500 metres down this road will bring you to a small bridge. You have arrived!
Insider Tip: Pretty basic dirt paths lead to the hot stream which is shallow and great for a dip. Park safely beside the one lane bridge. Visit in daylight hours.

Waikite Valley Thermal Pools is a unique place to come and experience the ‘Living Waters’ of the Te Manaroa Spring - the largest single source of 100% pure boiling water in New Zealand. This pure spring water cascades into our main Settlers pool (35-38°C) and adjoining toddlers' beach area as well as the sit 'n' soak pool (38-40°C) and our luxurious tranquil garden and pergola pools. Our spacious heated changing rooms, with toilets and high pressure hot showers, are family-friendly and also offer wheelchair access.
We also have an informative Eco-Trail. Of geological and botanical interest, this educational walk leads to the spectacular Te Manaroa Spring. Along the way learn about the different fern and moss varieties that are unique to just a few geothermal areas in the southern Rotorua area.
After enjoying our unique waters and exploring the Eco-Trail, relax with an ice cream, cold drink, coffee, snack or casual meal from the ‘Pukeko in a Ponga Tree’ Cafe. The cafe has a spacious covered outdoor seating area that looks out over the pools and the valley beyond.
