Ubicación

Estambul, Beyoglu, Turquía

Tarlabasi neighborhood was a middle class Greek neighbourhood when it was founded at the beginning of 19th century. The area is full of houses of eclectic Ottoman liberty style buildings and ours is one of them. By the 1950’s most of the greek population of the area had to immigrate to Greece because of political reasons.

The area was deserted and by the 1980’s got an internal immigration from the east part of Turkey mostly of Kurdish origin. In the neighbourhood very few Istanbulite Greeks remained, there is a big Kurdish community of rural origin, a gypsy community that settled down many years ago and work in the area as musicians, many transgender people, poor families from the East and the Balck Sea coast, expats who fell in love with decadent touch and reasonable prices of the area, young artists, old artists, students, and us.

We, in our extent, fell in love with the building and liked the spirit of the area that welcomes all the outsiders of the town. It is the gilded area in the very heart of Beyoglu. You are five minutes walk to the most trendy spots of the city yet among the poor. For some people, the shabby surroundings may be disturbing. For us it is home.

There are kurdish women sitting on the street and staring at you. If you are disturbed by people staring at you while you walk then you should probably look for another place to stay. Our street is full of children. Unlike the rest of the town, in our neigbourhood kids play on the streets. The area also has a drug reputation up to about a decade ago, but has since then been cleaned up, mostly.

Our house is really big for us. My husband and I like the energy of young people from all around the world coming and bringing us a piece of their world while we stay in our home. We’ve been renting rooms for the last 8 years and for two years on Airbnb.

Some people fell in love with the area and the house, and they keep coming back. Some even bought apartments and became our full time neighbours. Some, on the other hand, wanted to run away as soon as they heard the name of Tarlabasi. Especially the ones who have posh Turkish friends who cringe when hearing the name.

People who are free of prejudices, with no hidden or open racist tendencies, who don't look for a piece of their own garden but a real experience are welcome to make our home their home in Istanbul.

I am from Adana, a town in old Cilicia, have been living in Istanbul for quite a while. I have worked in tourism sector for a long time now I am retired and want to know new people. I can speak english and I can join you through your visit to show Istanbul or giving you some local information. I love cooking and feel myself lucky to know both eastern and wester cooking traditions of Turkey and willing to give half day cooking classes to whom it may interest.
