How and why we do what we do.

We started hosting airbnb out of a love for travel. I can remember as a child traveling cross country with our big family and sleeping in the car to save on hotel fees. :)
While traveling in Germany I first encountered the Hostel model for lodging. It really influenced the choices we made in our listing and our decision to keep costs low. We believe you shouldnt have to be a millionaire to afford travel.
In the spirit of openess I would like to talk a little bit about our pricing structure.
On an average reservation we make arround $15-$20 per person, per night. Out of this, we cover the costs for laundry, toiletries, cleaning supplies, replacements for towels and linnens and such plus keeping the lights on and the water hot. :)  This also covers the time we put in to every reservation. From answering questions and cleaning rooms, shoping for supplies to being there for your arrival, even if traffic caught you late, or the train was delayed and it ends up being later than you thought (we totaly get it, we are travelers too.)
This pricing structure allows us to offer affordable lodging to those seeking it, and to meet all kinds of people from everywhere. We love it!...- But ...what kinda breaks our hearts is when someone books our budget accomodation and expects the Ritz Carlton.  That is not what we are. That is available. There are high priced Luxury hotels and hundred and thousand dollar listings to be had only a few blocks from us,  there a tons of listing wich charge a hefty cleaning fee for every reservation, and if thats what you like, we are not downing you, but what we do frown upon is when people have caviar tastes, but insist on a hamburger budget and we get caught up in the midle of it.

In other words, if you think you are too good for this airbnb, you probably are ;). Again, no problem, we still like you, we just think you might be more comfortable some place else, then we can all be happy :)

So these are the kinds of things you can expect in our listing:
A lived in house, functional and often cute extras. Like we have a little toaster or a toaster oven in the rooms cause some people like to be able to heat up a little dinner. Some utensils maybe chop sticks, maybe vintage silver, maybe plastic or wooden utensils. Live plants. Mismatched rugs...Do flowers go with stripes?!? Books to read, salt and pepper...Sometimes milk and creamer , Maybe we put some fresh berries in your fridge or we got a good deal on bagels so we share them with you. You will always find things like: super comfy pillows and lots of them, organic cleaning products, cushy beds, a friendly cat, an acrobatic cat and a really nice dog.

Every rose however has its thorn. Here is what you may be giving up if you book here:
A hospital sterile level of cleanliness. We clean every room for every booking, wash the linnens and sweep and mop the floors and furniture and such, but we just can't afford to spend hours and hours on it. We don't move the furniture after every guest to scrub the floor underneath. We dont clean every level of each stripe of blind every day, we don't scrub the baseboards or windows on every reservation. Previous guests have used the apliances in your room. There might be discolorations associated with use. Like burn marks in the toaster oven or a slightly darker shade of pale in the microwave. Can you handle that? These apliances a free bonus we offer with rooms. The apliances are pretty cute, but they are not museum show pieces.

I teach my kids that weather a glass is half full or half empty is a matter of how you look at it and I think that's true. Is our stairway a hundred year old work of art, or is it old and creeky? How do you look at it?

A bit more about our cats and dog:
Do you like Garlic? Ever cook with it? What does it smell like? Garlic? Yes...

We are a pet friendly location. We invite guests to bring thier dogs and cats along with them, plus we have our own. Some people seem to have dogs free of allergen and cats who's litter never stinks. Apparantly our pets are not those special kind. They are just regular cats and dogs with the regular associated traits including scent. If you are alergic to pets it probably won't work well for you here. If you are so afraid of pets that just seing one will throw off your whole visit, you won't be comfortable here, so why put you and us through all the stress??? If you have pets and you understand, or you like pets and you understand, a hearty welcome.

If you like aibnb cause you want to live like a local, come on over. This is our honest life :) We have an urban farm, an organic garden. We like to  travel and meet new people and stay home and meet new people. And be a part of a good trip and time well spent. If you do too, you're invited!
