We will be have a walking discussion of Russia today. The buildings we will see around us as we stroll through the city will help us in this endeavor. They will tell us about Russian mentality and culture as we make connections between these places and the Russia we see today. We will also have a short tea break along the way with a treat. Any and all questions about life in Russia are welcome and encouraged! This is a walking tour. Public transport is available across the bridge we will explore if requested by the group. After finishing at Peter and Paul fortress, I will be happy to provide guidance to transport options for your next adventures.
I am originally from Illinois (USA) and have been living in Russia for over seven years. My experiences have taken me from St. Petersburg all the way to Vladivostok and back, helping me to see the immense size and variety that this country has to offer. I first became interested in Russia due to watching lots of James Bond films as a child. I was also fascinated by the mysterious nature of this place, but over time learned that Russia is not as much as an enigma as many think. I love showing people St. Petersburg, the city I now call home, and sharing with them the rich history of this place. I want to help visitors understand what Russia is today, with the hope of clearing up misunderstandings. I earned a Master’s degree in Russian history to further my own interests and have found it complements my efforts of telling people about Russia

Starting in the historic center of the city, near Gostiny Dvor, we will walk along Nevsky Prospect to Griboedov Canal, discuss a popular eyesore, imagine ourselves in a military parade on Mars Field, and then cross the Neva to unpack a complicated period in Russian history, the Stalinist era, and finish at one of the first structures in the city: Peter and Paul fortress.
