After meeting your guide outside the Hockey hall of Fame, you'll head directly to your first stop, a popular craft beer bar for a beer and a talk on the history of this beverage. Your guide will explain the basics of beer, the major styles, and how to best taste beer (like a beer judge). Next is a visit to the St Lawrence Market, one of the can't-miss places to experience in Toronto where your guide will introduce you to a couple of their favourite vendors and sample some of their offerings. We don't want to ruin the surprise! From the St Lawrence Market, you will walk to our second pub stop - a great local "dive bar" with a great origin story and an even better beer selection. Over another beer, your guide will delve into the history of prohibition in Ontario, and the effects of it on our liquor laws even today. Our last stop is the Historic Distillery District a refurbished whiskey factory turned into an incredible pedestrian neighbourhood filled with unique shops and businesses, and most importantly a local brewpub where we will sample some of their brews while talking about the future of beer in Toronto.
My friends Mike, Jordan, Tim, and I have been teaching people about beer and Toronto history for years. I have a degree in cultural anthropology and own a popular walking tour company, Mike is a history buff and comedian, Jordan is a published beer writer and historian, and Tim studied tourism and hospitality in addition to being an actor. With any one of us you'll learn plenty about beer and Toronto history, while having some laughs along the way. Our tours feel more like hanging out with a new friend than a typical tour.
