We will meet in Lancaster's historic Penn Square and proceed on an exploratory experience of our city and it's' rich, and often forgotten, brewing history. You will experience the interwoven and fascinating connections of 19th century German Brewers to the history of Lancaster. Often described as the Munich of the U.S., Lancaster at times produced as much as 20% of the nation's beer. Through intriguing stories and insights you will learn how industry, architecture, arts, and culture enjoy a rich and symbiotic relationship with Lager Beer. You’ll visit catacombs and resurrected breweries, the unlikely industrial site that drove German immigration, the original saloon of one of the most prominent breweries of the time, and the literal end of the line for prohibition trickery – all with compelling tales that tie past to present. And just to make it interesting, we will be sampling original recipe's of our heritage breweries along the way!
Other things to note
This is a walking experience with multiple stops and the opportunity to rest. Guests should be able to walk 2.5 miles at a leisurely pace. If special accommodations are needed, please ask.

I have lived in this historic community for 47 years, attending high school and college here, and running multiple entrepreneurial ventures. I studied local history extensively both in school and after, and have a lifelong curiosity for exploring it as a way of understanding and informing the present. I would consider myself a well qualified, amateur local historian. I am also no slouch as a beer aficionado. Over time, I have cultivated many local contacts that give me unusual access to fascinating historical brewery venues with links from the past to the present.

If you're an out-of-towner, Mike's tour will bring to life what Lancaster and its brewing scene was like in the 1800's and beyond. Even if you live or grew up in Lancaster as I did, his tour and his historical knowledge will engage and dazzle you, revealing the previously unknown history of locations passed many times before. Mike shared facts and locations that gave our party of eight a better understanding of Lancaster's heritage, particularly as related to German immigrants' influence on beer. The stops at local breweries were well selected and Mike's ease in accommodating our group and the weather made for a fun and enlightening experience that also quenched our thirst.

Just what my family needed to unwind from a crazy year. We spent the time sitting on the back porch and soaking in the spectacular view. Very unique and special location, and the host was excellent. I’d definitely come back again.

This tour is brilliant! As a European you might think it starts a little dry (not literally ;) ), we’re not quickly impressed by facades of older buildings, as our concept of an old building is a little different to that of Americans. But pretty soon the inside stories come and you connect with Micheal as he tells you about the history of the places and the people who worked there or owned to breweries, prohibition times and even American history and culture in general. There is no time pressure, you don’t feel rushed, if you don’t have to be somewhere else on time then the tour is taken at an easy pace and no question is to much. Micheal has a wide range of knowledge and his open personally really is the icing on the cake!

This tour was awesome! A perfect balance between history and beer tasting. Michael was a great guide, knowledgeable in both the beer itself and the history behind it. He had a lot of fun facts and anecdotes to add from having lived in the area for so long, which made me feel like I was almost getting an exclusive “behind the scenes” tour of the city. I was a bit worried about following with a Bluetooth connection, but it was no issue at all! Overall a fun, informative tour and a great way to learn about and experience the city of Lancaster while tasting some delicious brews!

This was my first Airbnb experience and it was amazing! Michael is very knowledgeable on all the history of Lancaster and on the first wave of brewers to pop up in the area. Most important of all he made us feel comfortable to be around and he is super friendly. I was skeptical going on any tour of Lancaster since I grew up there but he constantly surprised me with information that I plan on surprising my friends with who are still local. I already have recommended this tour to a few friends the next time they are in the Lancaster area.
