As a nature-loving chef with an insatiable curiosity, I've spent the past three years studying and cooking with the edible and medicinal flora of the Mojave desert. In 2016, I founded High Desert Test Kitchen, a wild foods educational project that brought together members of our local community on a monthly basis to learn how to cook with plants from this region. This past year, I started Hole in the Sand, my platform for immersive wild foods dining events, and I began to lead plant identification hikes with Airbnb Experiences. I'm an avid backpacker and have been hooked on the sport since my first summit at age 13. I've completed backcountry survival and bushcraft courses with the Thomas Coyne Survival School, and have an up-to-date certification in Wilderness First Aid. I'm excited to introduce you to this magical place I call home!

Sarah is the perfect guide for exploring a new corner of the world - she's passionate, thoughtful, experienced, and perfectly customizes the trip to her guests' abilities and interests. I learned so much about the local environment as well as making a lifestyle out of adventures like these. I wish I could have Sarah with me on any backpacking trip!

My wife and I had some experience with day-hiking but no experience with overnight camping and we wanted to try something that would be more of a challenge but not too crazy. Sarah was very patient and spent time talking with us before the trip about any specific requirements or needs we had and hiking with her turned out to be the perfect opportunity to step out of our comfort zones and try something new. Sarah is a very energetic and friendly guide and also extremely knowledgeable about the plant life native to the Yucca Valley - as well as being an amazing chef - and we definitely benefited from her expertise in these areas. She was very attentive to our needs throughout the adventure and eager to make sure that every aspect of our time together was amazing. The stop at the goat farm was really more of an added bonus - as our main goal was to see how it was hiking with a 35 pound pack on our backs - but it made for a fascinating evening of food and conversation getting to know both her and Emmanuel better. I could go on and on but the main thing I can say is that if you are looking for a challenge but also something that is relatively safe and achievable - along with food of the highest quality, you can't go wrong with Sarah as this is a great experience to help you get to appreciate overnight hiking and the amazing beauty and plant life of the Yucca Valley area.

Amazing trip with Sarah. It was our first backpacking & camping in the desert. Sarah provided a very detailed guide beforehand and helped us get ready. Also, hiking with her dog, Beatrice, made it even more joyful. Would recommend it to those who'd like a unique weekend getaway.

High and Dry Desert backpacking trip was a truly wonderful and awe inspiring experience! We hiked through breathtaking landscapes that were diverse and rich in flora and fauna (especially the flora as the desert was in full, spring, super bloom! ) The hike left from my host Sarah’s back door - and had us exploring breathtaking boulders, fragrant fields of flowers and even a small trickle of water flowing down the Hondo wash. The second night spent at a goat farm was an extra bonus! Sarah is a knowledgeable, charismatic and seasoned guide - full of passion for what she does and the landscape she has made her home. As mentioned, the hike leaves literally from her backyard - so she is extremely knowledgeable of the terrain and plant life in the area. Sarah shared many tips and information about the medicinal uses of native plants - while maintaining a deep respect for the terrain that surrounded us. This trip was an amazing experience and I would recommend it for anyone who wants to try some backpacking in the high desert. I am not an experienced hiker - but have spent a lot of time camping. Sarah’s guidance, from the detailed packing list to the information on water and first aid, to the follow up communication - made me feel very prepared and well taken care of. This trip is one that I will cherish for years to come!
