Qué harás

Join me on a leisurely 4-mile* walk through the beautiful Sussex countryside, vineyards and an ancient hollow way following in the footsteps of Romans, commoners and a king fleeing for his life! (*3 or 5-mile routes are available if booked as a private group. )

We'll start our walk in a village just a ten-minute drive (20-minute by bus) north of Chichester, passing through vineyards, farmland and a beautiful tunnel of trees.

After a short walk uphill, we'll see the restored windmill built in 1740 and have time to admire the 360° views of the Sussex countryside. The Isle of Wight can be seen from here on a clear day.

Learn about Boxgrove Man, the oldest human remains ever found in England, a Neolithic settlement and see WWII radio direction-finding structures. Hear local folktales and learn a little Sussex dialect.

Depending on the time of year, we may see a range of butterflies and birds including buzzards, swifts and skylarks.

While lunch is not included, it is available after our walk from a local pub serving great food made from locally sourced ingredients.

Chichester is the nearest railway station. There is a regular bus service from there to the meeting point. Just ask if you'd like to know more.

This walk can also be combined with a 2nd walk with a pub lunch in between (min 2 people) but please contact me before booking

I've lived in West Sussex all my life and love sharing the beautiful countryside and the secrets hidden along these sometimes hard to find footpaths.

I've researched the area, speaking to locals and local historians to learn more about the layers of history hidden here, reaching back over 500,000 years.

Donde estarás

The walk will lead us along a lovely public footpath shaded by an avenue of trees, through vineyards, fields, and along an ancient hollow way through a magical tunnel of trees . The route then goes uphill a short way to the restored windmill and where we can admire the 360° views.

What a lovely experience! My partner and I had a great time on our walk with Kathryn. We learned a lot about the area and really enjoyed the storytelling. The tree tunnel is magical and the windmill was worth the uphill hike!

We very much enjoyed our walk with Kathryn. Great local knowledge and some folklore. Varied surroundings and it was absolutely stunning throughout. Only advice would be give yourself a bit more than 2 hours so you can meander a bit. We were on a tight schedule and would have enjoyed more time to just chat and pause. Otherwise, great pace and enjoyable walk.

A good walk and talk on fairy tales. Which although fun and engaging meant there was little actual history discussed which was a shame.

Kathryn is a personable and well travelled guide with personal knowledge of the area well supplemented by her research into local history and folklore. The walk included a variety of sights which were beautiful even on a grey day but must be stunning in the sunshine. We particularly enjoyed Kathryn's retelling of local folktales and quizzes on the historical local dialect and we appreciated how accommodating she was; from being flexible with timings and being willing to walk in the rain to being understanding of our hygiene and health concerns and defending us from the opinions of a wandering conspiracy theorist! Thank you for a lovely walk, Kathryn. It was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon.

A lovely walk with Kathryn who is very knowledgeable and entertaining about local history and folklore which she has researched from many sources. The weather wasn’t great and I was the only person there so I was pleasantly surprised to find that the walk was still going ahead. The sun came out by the time we got to the top of the hill for wonderful views of the Isle of Wight and surrounding countryside.

This walk was one of the highlights of my stay in Sussex. The landscape was amazing and I really appreciated Kathryn's knowledge of the area and stories she shared with me. Halnaker is definitely a hidden gem well worth visiting.
