Cast a rod and see each step of making a bamboo fly rod

A fly rod is built in the same way that bamboo grows. From the bottom, or butt, to the tip. You will remove a node from a 12' culm of Tonkin bamboo, using a small hack saw, as the first step in seeing how a custom 8' node-less fly rod is made. Then you will split one of 66 splints needed to form the tip or butt of the rod with a hammer and knife. You will scarf one splint to shape it for gluing. Fancy planing, shaping the cork handle, and silk wrapping will be demonstrated along with the final varnish dip. At the end of the class you are invited to cast a variety of rods that I have made with a casting lesson on the "green river" of my lawn. In 2 hours you will see how the rod is made but you will not build a completed rod -- that takes 100 hours!

The first time I saw a node-less bamboo fly rod I was enthralled by the stunning craftsmanship. The maker of the rod had been working at his craft for over 50 years and was ready to retire but first agreed to teach me the craft. Two years ago we set up my shop and after 100 hours I completed my first rod. It is a pleasure to share the rod making experience with others.

I had a great time learning the tools and techniques used to make nodeless bamboo rods. Deb and Glenn are great instructors, super friendly and a true wealth of knowledge. Thank you!

Wonderful experience with Deb and Glen. Both are a wealth of knowledge and have a passion for making fly rods. They were warm hosts, and we loved that the workshop was very hands-on. Would absolutely recommend!

"The best day ever!" words from my 4 year old who I took to learn to make a bamboo fishing rod as a Christmas gift. He loves tools and loves to build, and even though the description said 10 and older, I e-mailed with Deb (who is insanely responsive), and she felt like we could make it work. She was very organized and sent me very detailed instructions on how to get to the work-shop. There we met Deb & Glenn. She had warm coffee and hot coco with marshmallows (my son was smitten). They opened their hearts to my little guy and showed us how one makes a fishing rod from bamboo. It was incredible. They gave my son a hands on experience and he got to use all kinds of tools. He was in heaven. Deb even let him feed the goats and chickens in her yard. The experience ended with a gourmet spread of crackers, apples and cheeses and perhaps most precious, a video she had crafted of our experience which we shared with family members upon returning home. I can't recommend this experience enough. Deb is a truly gracious host and this is a truly unique experience.

I feel happy to have found Deb and Glenn who works with Deb on this bamboo flyrod construction. It was an analog experience with a man who has a long history making node free bamboo fly rods. I highly recommend!

Not only is this a great workshop for those who want to begin building bamboo rods but it is a fantastic opportunity for those who already fish them, want to fish them, or who are thinking about buying a bamboo rod. In two hours you will leave with an understanding and a knowledge about bamboo rods in terms of construction, craftsmanship and the process that you simply can't get reading articles and books or watching videos. I was amazed how my understanding went from almost nil to considerably more than nil. (and I've read a fair amount and watched lots of videos!). I HIGHLY recommend Deb's workshop to all those who have an interest in bamboo rods.
